No big surprise here, but Metro has sent out a release announcing the election of Ward 1 D.C. Council member Jim Graham as Chairman of WMATA's Board of Directors. Graham will serve a year-long term effective immediately, succeeding Christopher Zimmerman, whose term ended today. Graham has been on the Metro Board since 1999 and previously served as Board Chairman in 2003. Also elected today were Peter Benjamin, representing Maryland, as First Vice Chairman and Catherine Hudgins, representing Virginia, as Second Vice Chairman.

Great photo. Anybody ever see the Anthony Hopkins film, "Magic?"
Anyhoo, it's about time Graham got a decent parking space. That jerk Zimmerman was always taking up two spaces, scratching his VW Bug, and making him drive around the block looking for parking. Do you know how hard it is to find parking at WMATA HQ? When he's not driving around looking for a decent parking space, he's always dodging all these pedestrians coming out of the Metro and getting off the bus. WTF? Out of my way, people! I'M JIM GRAHAM! I'm no cheap, crooked politician, trying to save himself from the consequences of his crimes! I'M GONNA SEND YOU TO SING-SING, GETTYS! SING-SIIIIIIIING!
Plenty of spots over at DOT Headquarters.
Snork. Thanks, Monkey. Really, you can't expect him to walk the 0.8 blocks from the Metro station to the WMATA HQ. Do you know what a roving band of Hopkins groupies can do to an unprepared impersonator? Thank god he only drives the most sturdy of all VW getaway cars.
on a sunny day like today, he should be able to drive with the top down on the bug, too!
With all the bile spewed here about Jim Graham, do you think he has any idea how loathed he is by the people in this city who don't vote for him?
Why should Graham care what the rest of DC thinks? He only has to answer to the voting residents of Ward 1. Besides, shouldn't that question be addressed to Anthony Hopkins, who is standing immediatly behind Graham with his hand up his...you know.
I live in Ward One, and I can't stand him either, if for no other reason than the absurd appendages he's tacked onto Metro station names. Now that he's on the WMATA board, I look forward to seeing the zany names he comes up with next.
"Okay, so the map says we get on at Eastern Market/Barracks Row/Seward Square/Canales Meats Station, change trains at L'Enfant Plaza/Maine Avenue Fish Market/Sackler and Freer Galleries/Huge Mega Development Coming Soon Station, and get off at Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant/DC USA/The Other Station That's Sorta Near Adams Morgan Station."
I would never leave the Canales Meats Station. EVER.
They should change West Hyattsville to "West Hyattsville/Goatman Hollow."
There's an MAL joke here, but it's just too easy.
Who actually votes for this guy? Somebody must. It can't be just the masochist vote.
I'm up for a trade. I'll trade you one annoying gay person for one annoying black person.
You get Graham.
We'll take anyone but Kanye West.
I propose 2 new laws:
Law #1: Thou shalt not be an elected DC official if thou hasn't paid thine taxes to Ceasar.
Law #2: Thous shalt not be a member of the WMATA Board if thou doth not taketh the Metro on a regular basis.
Hey, c'mon, Cranky, don't you want the Metro run by the most able people? And aren't people with a lot of ability usually able to earn enough money and parking privileges not to have to take the bus or subway? How often do we see our locally-resident national leaders in government, finance, media, or industry on the Orange Line, after all?
Do you want Metro to be chaired by an angry toothless homeless guy in oilstain-colored clothes so filthy they stand up on their own, with a board comprising two teenagers loudly horsing around on the back of the X2, three tourists chosen based upon their inability to tell a Metro board meeting from the local Hard Rock Cafe, a hipster doofus playing with his iPhone, whoever it is who keeps eating sunflower seeds on the platform at Waterfront and spitting the hulls on the floor, and Monkeyrotica? Because if so, I and my iPhone have some really strong feelings about transit oriented development and would be glad to serve, so long as we don't have to sit between Monkey and the sunflower seed guy.
Wasn't this the guy who ran around the mall in a question mark suit and promised free money from the government? Cause you'd have to say that is relevant work experience for the WMATA Board and the DC Council.
Trust me, the Grahamstander is not as well liked in Ward One as you (and he) would think.
That being said, I think it's shameful that WMATA allows someone to chair its board (and no doubt get paid for it) that never sets foot on the Metro let alone a bus (despite the fact that the 42 stops two blocks from his house and a few blocks from his office).
Orville Redenbacker died so that Jim Graham could stand alone. Standing alone drenched in butter and eating a cool water sandwich.
