Gohmert, Chaffetz to Represent Us in Hearing

We've learned that the list of witnesses at this morning's hearing on legislation to grant the District a voting seat in the House just got much more interesting. On top of a predictable panel of supporters including Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), former Virginia congressman Tom Davis and Leadership Conference on Civil Rights President Wade Henderson, two of our favorite foes will argue against it -- Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tex.) and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Ut.).

You'll remember Gohmert from a memorable performance during floor debate on the bill in 2007, when he opined that D.C.'s residents don't need a representative because the 435 members of the House are already looking out for our best interests. We made him our honorary congressional representative, and readers flooded his office with constituent requests.

Rep. Chaffetz has made a name for himself for both sleeping on a cot in his office to save money and for having aggressively come out against the legislation, even though it would also grant his own state an additional seat. Chaffetz, a first-term congressman, defeated Chris Cannon, who supported the measure. The hearing starts at 10 a.m. and will be webcast.

I wouldn't trust either of these guys with my old socks. There's something a little Larry Craig-ey about Gohmert. I just can't put my finger on it. Neither do I want to.

so we're being represented by a guy from LNS and a guy from the daily show? heaven help us all.

If you sayin what I think you sayin, then them there young dude and the bald dude is doin it on the young dudes cot and before that the bald dude was doin it with like 435 other dudes. Yeah thats whats going on here.

Congressman who sleep in their offices should pay nominal rent to the government. There are very few officials for whom taxpayers intend to provide free housing, members of congress aren't among them.

I don't know how I feel about Chaffetz doing the leg work on behalf of DC voting rights...Stephen Colbert creamed him in their leg wrestling match.

I like Chaffetz. He is doing what a lot of DC residents do: live off the government.

Gohmert might just be cooky enough to represent the thousands of cooks in the district.

What's with this sleeping-on-cots business? Why do congresscritters actually want to suffer while they're in Washington? Do they just hate this city and everyone who lives in it more than they value their health or well-being?

Just a tip from a Californian re: Chaffetz: watch out for the LDS-ers when they decide to oppose something.
