There might be some shakeups in the way that the District's government celebrates the inauguration.
The Washington Post reported in December that Mayor Adrian Fenty was planning an inaugural party at the D.C. Armory on Sunday, January 18. The paper went on to report that Fenty was looking to snag performers Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and possibly another big name, and that the party would serve as a benefit for D.C. Public Schools.
According to an events manager at the Armory, the venue is not hosting an inaugural ball by Mayor Fenty, or anyone else, on Sunday, January 18. Fenty spokesperson Mafara Hobson told DCist that the mayor "never announced that we were hosting a ball. The Post has been running a series of articles on a rumor that we were hosting a concert for the inauguration."
She explained that the D.C. Council planned to host a ball in the Wilson Building, and that that in part led to some confusion. (In fact, the District of Columbia Young Democrats are hosting the D.C. 51st State Inaugural Reception at the Wilson Building to honor the D.C. Council—but that's on January 20.)
So the Mayor isn't having a party? He may be after all. Sources tell DCist that Mayor Fenty is still working on an event for this Sunday and that it will definitely be a benefit for DCPS—if it happens. Chances are slim that it will involve Kanye or the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul at this point, and it's definitely not happening at the Armory, but we hear the Mayor is nevertheless still scrambling to put together a concert even at this late date. Stay tuned!

I can't believe how poorly planned and secretive the inaugural events have been:
It is astounding how "on the outside" living in DC feels at this moment.
Par for the course. Fenty's inaugural party in 2007 was an utter fiasco, and worthy of entry in the party-planning Hall of Shame. Someone tell the Mayor his 15 minutes of fame are up. The way he's glommed onto Obama is looking a little pathetic.
If you are looking for a good party, check out the People's Inagurual at http://thepeoplesinaugural.com. Tickets are still available.
Nobody ever accused Mayor Fenty of being particularly smart.
Oh, there's a party. But you're not invited.

So I'm listening to WTOP this morning and they end their commercial with, "WTOPNEWS, you're Innauguration Station." But for some reason, I hear it as "Urine Auguration station" which I think is pretty cool, telling fortunes by looking at pee. Anyway, I'm not saying that someone should dump a huge paint bucket of urine on the Mayor's head at his party, Carrie style, but...
I'm sorry, I don't know how to end that sentence.
