Michael Steele Wins RNC Chair

michaelsteele_picnik.jpgWe're not sure what's more amazing, that the Republican National Committee has chosen a black man as its leader, or that Michael Steele actually got elected to something. Chris Cillizza has the details of the many, many ballots it took before Steele was handed the prize today at the Capital Hilton here in Washington. Steele, a D.C. native, was previously the chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, the GOP nominee in the Maryland Senate race in 2006, and the lieutenant governor of Maryland under Ehrlich.

To quote Randy Newman:

And as for the brother,
Well, Pluto’s not a planet anymore either

Oh Sommer, you're so snarky!

thus begins the attempt at the long march back to relevance...

Maybe the repubtards don't realize that just b/ he is black won't overcome the fact that he is wholly incompetent politician.

Used the same logic they did with Sarah "Hey Look At Me" Palin.

This is totally in line with what Mitch McConnell was saying earlier about embracing minorities more. I'd like to think they're lifting themselves out of the dark ages, but I can't help but feel this isn't quite what they all really wanted, but was just out of necessity.

REPUBLICANS: We love Black people! Just don't touch my car or my daughter.

Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos?

The fact that Mr Steele has little to no street cred is really going to limit his effectiveness in bringing minorities into the fold.

There is no evidence of past drug use. He doesn't smoke. No absentee father in his past. There is even ample documentation that Mr Steele has consistently scored in the double-digits when bowling (The kiss of death.)

Bon chance, Monsieur Steele!

"We're not sure what's more amazing, that the Republican National Committee has chosen a black man as its leader, or that Michael Steele actually got elected to something."

In response to point (1); oh, I get it! Republicans are racists! You're right Sommer - up until now, the most a conservative African American can accomplish is Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Let's see; first African American Secretary of State: appointed by a republican. Second African American Secretary of State: appointed by a republican. First African American National Security Adviser - Hey! That's a republican appointee too! And to those (demonfafa) who suggest that African Americans are only successful in the republican party because of tokenism, I suggest that is an insult to the many black politicians who are willing to look beyond the democratically-propagated idea that "republican blacks aren't really black."
Seriously, Sommer, when you publish comments like that, it's extremely offensive, and really illustrates the point that maybe DCist should stick to covering food and entertainment and leave the real journalism to people who can actually be unbiased in their reporting.

As to point (2), don't forget that Mr. Steele was elected as an African American Lt. Governor in one of the bluest of blue states. Insult the man as much as you'd like, but don't lie about his electoral record.

Actually, your comment about him getting elected is a little inaccurate. In MD, the Gov and Lt. Gov. are elected on the same ticket. People voting for Ehrlich automatically got this fine specimen as part of the deal. Steele has never been elected to anything independently.

Whatever. His signs were blue and said "steele democrat" The guy obviously has identity problems.
Come to think of it, maybe he is a good fit in his new job.

Steele was virulently anti-gay during his tenure in office, even supporting Ehrlich's refusal to support a bill allowing same sex couples to be able to make medical decisions for their partners.

That's an extreme position, even for Republicans.

And Steele is almost certainly connected to the very ugly scandal involving the MD state police spying on Americans in the name of 'homeland security'.

Not sure this really represents a 'new day' for Republicans as much as it does a step backward.

But his is a jovial guy. I'll give him that.

Hey! It's cool to be black again. Black is cool. Black is the new white. So, now it's cool to be a republican. YAYTH!

Does he still think stem cell research is akin to Nazi experiments during the Holocaust? Will Mike Tyson now be added to the parade of D-list Republican celebrities?
