Good morning, D.C. It's the Monday after New Year's, and we're all back in our offices for the first totally full work week we've been faced with in some time. President-Elect Barack Obama has arrived in town, the 111th Congress convenes tomorrow with a mandate to hammer out an economic stimulus package, and the D.C. Council starts its 18th session since Home Rule this week with one new member. It's back to school day for Washington, and as much as we'd like to stay in bed just a little longer, 2009 is comin' atcha whether you're ready for it or not.
Tim Kaine Picked for DNC Chair: What does the governor of Virginia get after being passed over for the VP nod? By all accounts, it looks like it's the Democratic National Committee chairmanship. Gov. Tim Kaine appears to have a lock on the job, and will formally succeed Howard Dean as the full-time chair in 2010, working part-time from Richmond until his term as governor is up next year. Look for Kaine to be a visibly weakened governor in the eyes of the Virginia General Assembly, who haven't taken too kindly to previous governors who shifted focus during their final year in officer.
Briefly Noted: Amtrak accident Sunday night delays trains arriving in D.C. ... Suspects still at large after carjacking, police chase ... Loudoun County wants piece of stimulus pie ... Drunk driver's best friend killed in Fairfax County car accident.

I could go for a piece of "stimulus pie." KnowhatImean? Nudge nudge. Say no more.
Looks like the Howard Theater development passed HPRB approval. Just in time to languish from lack of development capital. Developers have been pitching this site for a decade. This should have been fasttracked years ago.
Worst case scenario: they get some godawful public/private partnership like the Lincoln Theater. Look forward to multi-million-dollar subsidies in exchange for one Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, a couple of step dances during homecoming week, and a dark stage nine months out of the year. What they need is some resident acting company to put on shows year round. Plenty of underemployed actors and musicians in this town. Otherwise, you're stuck with two underutilized theaters on U Street.
there are quite a few theater companies in town who would love to have a home space that something like the howard would provide. i get the feeling, though, that there will be a lot of requirements for programming there that would be true to its roots. might be tough to pull off, though.
@monkeyrotica: I'd like to see the poor slobs stuck in dinner-theatre jobs (i.e. as "entertainment" on the Spirit of Washington's boat cruises) find a better outlet for their creativity! A venue for year-round shows would be excellent. Hear, hear.
Anybody know how the Metrobus detour around Hay-Adams went this morning? What kind of madness can I expect tomorrow?
Any one know why the intersection at 7th and H St (Chinatown) was roped off yesterday around 2, with lots of police in the area? Looked like a red Jetta was involved somehow....
Apparently it struck a pedestrian in the intersection. Not sure any other details, except for the fact that I saw the police extracting two separately-caged birds from the back seat and trunk. Weird.
Being near this intersection quite often, I'm amazed more pedestrians don't get hit. Why do people risk death to save a few seconds waiting for green?
