Obama Shoots Hoops at Marie Reed

2009_0114_bball.jpg WTOP's Mark Segraves has a nice little scoop—apparently President-elect Barack Obama played basketball at the Marie Reed Community Learning Center in Adams Morgan on Sunday. According to his spokesperson, he left the Hay Adams Hotel at 5:15 p.m. and and played basketball for 45 minutes. But wouldn't the center have been closed at that hour? Indeed, but Mayor Adrian Fenty arranged for it to be opened for the president-elect.

At this frenetic pace, Obama could well see more of the District than any of the 43 presidents before him, and before even being inaugurated. While his weekend trip to Ben's Chili Bowl has been derided by some as a predictable stunt, playing basketball at a local community center is something we don't think any president has done before.

There should be a DCist spinoff... Obamaist: tracking Obama's life second-for-second.

I heard he changed his shorts today, but it's only a rumor.

Is it just me, or are Mayor Fenty's wannabe-BFF-with-Obama actions starting to remind people of Jim Carrey's character in The Cable Guy

No, it's not just you.

Hmm... Do you think that Fenty can get Obama free cable?

"Obama could well see more of the District than any of the 43 presidents before him"

Not so sure. Many early Presidents used to just walk out the White House door and hit the streets.

But I heard they are installing a basketball court in the basement of the White House so this might be the first and last pick up game in DC.

I beg to differ. Both Rutherford B. Hayes and James Garfield were known to "shoot hoops." In one famous instance, the former accused the latter of tripping to which Garfield replied, "Bi**h, please. You trippin. Don't be bringin 'at trash 'round here. This my house!" Historians disagree as to the exact part that Hayes played in the Garfield assasination, but you can be sure bruised egos on the b-ball court played a significant part.

I'm pretty sure Clinton knew the location of every McDonalds in town, and would arrange his "jogging" excursions accordingly. Anything to get away from the Missus, prolly.

well, of course, presidents 150 years ago didn't have nearly as much city to see...since most of the city was woods and fields...

Don't forget the "swamps" around Swampoodle, which were once a writhing mass of feral bog chimps, hunted to extinction for their luxurious pubic "pelts." Their demand ceased once the novelty of feral bog chimp pubic pelt top hats began to wane. Unfortunately for the sperm whale, the idle rich quickly took to throwing throwing ambergris torches at eachother for sport and the rest is history.

he's coming over to my house for beers and Scrabble tonight. i'll post pics tomorrow.

And later on, he's coming over to my house, where we're going to have a pajama party. We're making s'mores!

Here is the real question, who did Obama shoot hoops with? Given the rec center was closed, it couldn't have been a pick up game (he had to bring the other players with him). When he drops by for a pick up game, then I'll get interested.

While his weekend trip to Ben's Chili Bowl has been derided by some as a predictable stunt..

C'mon DCist. If Obama had been to Ben's Chili Bowl over the weekend you guys would have written a story about it by now.

I'm waiting for Obama to show up for pickup ultimate frisbee at Malcolm X park.

Taft dominated the court at Rose Park. At 340 pounds he dominated most of the damn block.

DC has many historic hoops hotspots.
