Pedicabs Arrive, But What About Pedi-Passengers?

2009_0119_pedicab1.JPG

We told you the other day about Mayor Fenty's introduction of pedicabs as an additional mode of transportation for inauguration. And the pedicabs in fact, have arrived. We've seen them on U Street, in Adams Morgan and around Chinatown. What we haven't seen much of so far, however, are pedicabs with passengers in them. When he couldn't find a regular taxi, DCist's Sriram Gopal took one home from a gig last night at Bossa Bistro & Lounge in Adams Morgan. "I believe the last time I rode in one of those was in 1986, in India," Gopal said.

Have you taken a ride in a pedicab? Or have you seen tourists riding around in them? Let us know in the comments.

There were a number of pedicabs in use after yesterday's concert, getting people away from the mall, though with the tightly packed crowds I'm not sure they saved those people any time!

I've seen tons of them - though they always seem to be in way too low of a gear to be getting anywhere. Does anyone know how much they charge?

I saw a couple near 9:30 Club on Saturday night. There was a passenger in one that got dropped off outside the club. Otherwise I haven't seen many people riding in them, but I have seen them everywhere.

I took one yesterday from downtown (18th St) to the middle of Georgetown. I gave the rider $20. He said they usually charge by the minute, but since traffic was terrible, he couldn't justify doing that.

I think everyone should try it....the riders are here from Denver. They did the DNC event.

That thing was my SAVIOR last night. No cabs, (vacant anyways) up or down 7th St., at about 2:30am. A little chilly, but it certainly beat out walking from the Mandarin to GTown. I have no idea how much he was supposed to charge me, but I threw the guy a 20, on account of the fact that I just really did not walk to make that walk. Top notch pedi-cab dude.

I saw one outside the Ritz Carlton yesterday - it seemed strange since everyone walking out of the hotel were decked out in tuxes and gowns for the balls.

About 3 of them do the Adams Morgan/ Woodley Park Circuit. Definitely a good thing although they need more lighting I think, these out of state cars won't stop honking, like we're going to move..sheesh.

They were around this summer...welcome to the program DCist.....

They aren't bad except when their owners decide they need to get coffee or food and they are parked on the sidewalk. Unlike the one pictured above, they tend to take up a lot of sidewalk space.

I haven't taken one, but was in a cab on U Street behind one on Saturday night. I feared for the driver's and passengers safety as I saw the pedicab go through a red light, pull around an SUV that was parallel parking and almost smack into the side of a cab that was pulling a u-turn.

That's fine, but what of the much ballyhooed "pedo-cabs" as sponsored by the North American Man Boy Love Association? Is there no love for pedophiles who want to give back to the community, and maybe make some new contacts? No? Alright then.
