WJLA is reporting a police-involved shooting at a mental health group home on 800 block of 7th Street NE.

Officers say they responded to a call for an assault in progress at 10:45 a.m. At the group home, a man allegedly attacked one of the police officers with a knife and a pole, at which point officers opened fire. The shooting victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. An officer sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.

Police then found a stabbing victim inside the group home. WJLA reports the shooting victim is the primary suspect in that stabbing. No details yet available on the condition of the stabbing victim.

Given the nature of the group home as serving the mentally ill, we're sure the City Paper's Jason Cherkis will be all over this story. Cherkis owned the aftermath of the police-involved fatal shooting of mentally ill Logan Circle resident David Kerstetter.

Happens too often. Police need to work with mental health experts on training on how to deal with agitated persons with mental disabilities. Police in Frederick, MD (with a large mentally disabled population from the Waystation in downtown Frederick) receive such training and are very successful in avoiding violent confrontation with agitated, unstable persons. Of course, we don't know the details of this incident, but I am always concerned where lethal force is use don the mentally ill - who often become more aggressive, paranoid, and unstable when traditional police tactics are used (show of physical force, loud and agressive commends, and surrounding/cornering of person).

Sad.

True, though I have to give you credit for "getting ahead of the curve," and blaming the MPD officers in the face of our collective ignorance. Kudos!

ph7, i know what you mean. perhaps this is a case of running amok?
Can't say that I am surprised... police already responding a scene of a stabbing and a guy with a knife?
