WAMU says that he did not, opting instead to display special inauguration-themed plates on the presidential limousine, aka The Beast, during Tuesday's Inaugural Parade. As you can see in the above photo, the plates are blue, and display the numeral '1.'
The D.C. Council had sent a letter urging President Obama to put the plates, which famously protest the District's lack of voting representation in Congress even though its residents pay full federal income taxes, on the limo for the inauguration. For their part, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton chose not to press the matter. A banner displaying the message "A More Perfect Union Must Include Full Democracy in DC" was visible from the Inaugural Parade route, affixed to the District government's parade viewing stand in front of the John A. Wilson Building.
WAMU quotes DC Vote executive director Ilir Zherka saying his group will continue to lobby for Obama's support on the D.C. Voting Rights Act. On Tuesday, DC Vote public affairs director Eugene Dewitt Kinlow told DCist he expects the bill to head for Judiciary Committee markup was early as next week.

ok, so he had special plates for the parade. has anyone seen the car since? i know it's been out and about town. does he switch to standard plates now, or keep the blue ones.
(for the record, the special plates are nice, but it seemed like a cop-out on a simple little thing that could have been done. with the "Tw/oR" plates on the limo, some of the press might have talked that up and edumacated a few people watching at home on TV in flyover country...)
Yes they do switch. Bush switched to standard DC plates soon after.
So a little bit of research of teh internez strongly suggests that the inaugural plates expire on March 31st. I find this slightly bizarre, because it's not as if a cop is going to pull over the presidential limo for any reason, much less for expired tags. Regardless, we should know by the end of March as to what plates Obama wants. I guarantee you I will not be losing any sleep over this issue though.
Even the White House has to worry about liability. Aside from the president and his family lots of staff and dignitaries ride in the limo. Without proper registration part of which is valid tags then there would be no liability coverage for the beast and its occupants. So no the cops may not stop the presidential motorcade on a traffic violation but if the poor driver has a fender bender and needs coverage for personal injury etc. then the vehicle needs valid tags. So far Obama has done the right thing so I hope he keeps it up and adopts Taxation without Representation Tags.
Have you heard of the concept of sovereign immunity?
Can't take sovereign immunity to the ER, get workmen's comp or disability with it. Granted that thing most likely could dent a tank or at least take out a wall or two but accidents do happen and the guy driving can get hurt.
You can't take sovereign immunity to the ER - whatever that means - but you can sure as hell take it to court. I didn't spend 3 years in evil law school to be called Mr. DreadPirate, thank you very much. If the government has a policy on that thing - and I have no idea as to whether it does - you're in luck. If not, the concept precludes your recovery absent truly egregious circumstances. As Mel Brooks said, it's good to be the King. Or something like that.

I had the most troublesome time signing in. I was ever so sad...but now I'm here. Are U a girl?
Yeah. SQL errors galore. Love that Web 2.0! Choke-a-hobo-riffic!
Forget the plates. That tank he's driving is an environmental travesty. Single digit MPG and spewing 16 tons of CO2 into the air every year. Every child with asthma in DC can thank the President for making their condition worse. Why does the President hate children with asthma and the planet?
Can we all STFU about the damned license plates that will NEVER make it on the Presidential limo? YES WE CAN!
I know algore is personally planting trees for the carbon credits needed to offset the pollution from the Presidential limo.
Isn't writing Al's name like that one of the cute things Rush Limbaugh does?
does the car sport dc tags or fed tags?
So earlier in the day (8am or so), I saw a small motorcade heading west on I street. They were empty (at least based on the small size of the motorcade). One limo had '1' on the plate and another had '44'. I know they put the seal on when Bush and Obama carpooled to the Capitol, did they also change the plate? or what was the 44 limo? I didn't see '44' at all when I re-watched it on CNN.
We just watched 44's motorcade leave the White House and exit out New York Avenue. They were speeding faster than any motorcade I've seen in over a decade. They still had the blue plates, but the car with Obama had "44" on the plate.
How long until I'm back to being annoyed by the motorcades and security delaying my trip to and from work?
If anyone looks at some obscure DC laws, there's provisions in there for the Mayor to issue special commemorative inaugural license plates and how long they're good for. Of course, I'm assuming Fenty didn't actually issue these plates, b/c you know if he had, there'd be a bunch of Council members that wanted their own commemorative tags b/c each and every one of them is as precious and unique as a snowflake.
The 44 means 44 level Arch/Mage Redguard.
If the Prez had sported the TWP plates then his shields would have been reduced by 50% but his elemental skills would have increased by 10. He was able to keep the 1st lady warm with his Earth/Flame spell.
ABC World News Tonight had a story about the new limo a few days before the inauguration and showed it with a different set of plates. They were "DCish", but I don't recall if it had the slogan. That video clip doesn't seem to be on their website (there's a different story in the Web Extra section that's more about other limos than Obama's).
I bet it is treated like any newly registered car is treated and these special tags are no different than the dealers paper plates. I am sure the White House will get their proper DC plates in a few months in the mail.
Who cares about a 14" x 9" license plate? Geeesh. I'd rather see him driving around the city in the Batmobile. Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Batman!
So just how well is that "Taxation Without Representation" slogan working out?
Alert!
Voting Rights Hearing Set: Jan. 27
If the driver has a fender bender, the boys in the vehicle wearing the balaclavas and packing heat will um...take care of it...
There were indeed '44' plates on the presidential motorcade. I spotted these parked next to the Lincoln Memorial prior to the We Are One concert
