Will Republicans Still Drink Pepsi?

When I was in Denver for the Democratic National Convention last August, I wondered if the anti-Coca-cola policies of the Pepsi Center wouldn't lead the then-Obama campaign to alienate a large segment of the population: Coke drinkers. But with Pepsi's latest ad campaign popping up all over Washington, in Metro stations, the sides of Metro buses, and even outside Union Station in advance of Obama's inauguration on Tuesday, the tables have turned.

Do you think Pepsi is now the one in danger of alienating almost half of the country with these blatantly Obama-themed ads?

DING! You are the WINNAH of a chicken DINNAH!

The phrase "worse than Hitler" is tossed around alot nowdays. In a discussion of Republicans, Pepsi, and the Innauguration, I think we've achieved a trifecta of Hitleriffic proportions. I mean really. "Will Republicans Still Drink Pepsi?" When did they stop drinking urine? I didn't get the memo. Those Ak-Sar-Ben urine guzzling parties are the stuff of legend in the GOP. How do you think Tim Hutchinson kept his youthful appearance?

just post the winners to the DCist Exposed 2009 show. you know that's what we're all waiting for today.

Until this campaign is over, no Pepsi pour moi. They knew they ran the risk of alienating 48% of the electorate. They asked for it, and I'm going to give it to 'em.

Hey, Indra "Middle Finger" Noori! REFRESH THIS!

Best part, no where on that sign says Pepsi. I even saw tourist taking pictures of the sign on the metro thinking that it was about Obama.

Well, I favor Pepsi, but these days, I'm drinking Jones or Hansen, or other brands that are sweetened with cane sugar and not that disgusting HFCS.

oh shit, now the people from the HFCS council are going to spam the comments with all this stuff about "high-fructose corn syrup is good for you, blah, blah, blah, blah...."

"Dude, have you heard what they say about high fructose corn syrup?"

"What, that it's nutritionally the same as sugar? That it's fine in moderation?!"

I honestly can't stand Pepsi's new campaign trying to benefit off the popularity of Obama. Being a graphic designer, I think Obama's campaign took a large step forward with the importance of good design in a political campaign. But Pepsi, if you are going to rip off their creativity, couldn't you have put a slightly different spin on it? I would be ok with them doing a take off of Obama's campaign if it was something smart and creative. Not such an obvious rip off.

I wouldn't stop drinking Pepsi because of their political affiliations but more because of their lack in creativity.

I think my thought was less about Republicans--I don't think about them much anyway lately and didn't we always know that Coke is stronger in the South and Pepsi more popular in the North, setting up for some differences as such anyway...

More I was surprised to see Pepsi being so, well, cheap. I actual wondered if it would annoy Democrats more than Republicans that they apparently Pepsi cannot do their own marketing and thus are ripping off someone else more successful campaign.

Can Obama sue much like Polar Bear Cola, or whatever, sued Coke--though I think Polar totally lost that one.

I know it's all part of their Refresh Everything campaign, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that these signs are only going up in the DC Metro area, so most of the country won't even know about it.

Do you think Pepsi is now the one in danger of alienating almost half of the country with these blatantly Obama-themed ads?

Doesnt Pepsi already alienate half the country with their blatantly terrible soft drinks?

Indeed. Two words: Pepsi blows. (Coca-Cola stockholder here) And Diet Pepsi, bleh--that stuff wouldn't pass my lips even if I were dying of thirst.

Pepsi haters can suck on the end of my sword. Coke is for weaklings, vegetarians, and pandas (yes, I went THERE).

Your poor rhetoric betrays your argument. Vegetarians=democrats, which means that after this ad campaign, they'll be flocking to piss-water Pepsi. Coke takes the day!

I'm surprised the Republicans haven't finished off all the Grape Kool-Aid!!!

The only reason I knew these ads were for Pepsi is because I saw the logo featured an article about bad new logos and this new logo was next to the old logo. I thought it was a joke at first.

Isn't it usually a good idea when rolling out a new logo to, you know, do something to associate your company with it? I had no idea those were Pepsi ads at first, either.

Because they weren't pepsi ads first...

I think the message ("Hope") is exactly NOT partisan. It is a message that all Americans can get behind in these hard times, and it honors the increasingly popular (even mong those who didn't vote for him) incoming president. Obama is, after all, the President of (all of) these United States of America.

Pepsi is doing their part as a corporate citizen of this country to honor this historic time. The campaign will likely be encapsulated in the halls of the Smithsonian in years to come, highlighting the unprecidented excitment at the dawn of an uncertain, but hopeful, era.

The snarky tone of this blog post does not (and will not) enjoy the same treatment. Let's all get behind this President for the next few days of celebration, and leave behind (if we can) the provoking and imagined partisan characterizations.

Pepsi is doing their part as a corporate citizen of this country to honor this historic time.
Stealing a campaign theme from the winning candidate counts to promote some crappy product counts as good corporate citizenry these days? In that case, I can't wait until time travel is invented.

Step 1: Go back to 1969
Step 2: Seize control of GM
Step 3: Adopt Nixon's "Fuck you America!" campaign slogan
Step 4: Praise!

Seriously? This is not a shining example of "corporate citizenship." This is lazy corporate piggybacking.

So, fabs - how long have you worked for Pepsi or their P.R. firm?

guess what? they both alienated me when i realized that imbibing their products is bad for my health.

Me too! I gave up on soda years ago. I drink seltzer when I want something fizzy that's not beer.

Ugh! Seltzer? The only way I can stomach that stuff is to load it up with scotch to kill the taste. Same think with tonic water. Nasty stuff, until you add a LOT of gin.

Monkey, sometimes I mix it with fruit juice and vodka. Definitely improves the taste.

How can you simians mix your liquor with another liquid? Even ice is taboo. Grow a backbone. Drink it straight up from the bottle. Mixers are for sissies.

This message was brought to you by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. hic!

Err, fruit juices can have as much sugar as soda. In fact, haven't you just re-invented it, fruit juice with fizz?

Pepsi runs the same risk that other brands are running, like IKEA, which is playing on the 'change' theme.

Well, for a second here lets disregard that with a few exceptions I am not a fan of the Pepsi line...
But as an informed consumer, should I not take the politics and actions of a company into account when making a decision? Isn't that what the right always gets dinged on, not considering the actions and just looking at the cost/value?
So yeah, its one more arrow in my quiver for not liking Pepsi.

Pepsi could learn a thing or two from Coca-Cola, about not fu*king with your logo every ten years or so.

Funny (or not) anecdote: In Italy people that buy or serve Pepsi are considered cheap because it's so inexpensive. Coca Cola is much classier and much preferred. They still serve it in glass bottles at restaurants.

It definitely begs an even more important question, "Who gives a flying f*ck"?

Lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy.

What I really wonder about is how the Republicans within the Pepsi Corporation feel about this whole thing. That oughtta be interesting!

that wasn't supposed to be a reply to HCE, I don't know why it did that...

You could always drink Bongwater.

i get the feeling some people here already do

Reallly trying hard not to cover inauguration events today, huh dcist?

I'm dying to hear where 500,000 peeps are going to watch musicians perform at the Lincoln... without any water, beer, coffee, or food.

Oh, ye of little faith. Heard ye not the Gospel According to Bagger Vance? All shall be provided for through HOPE®. Remember the miracle of the Loaves and the Fishes? Get ready for the miracle of the Halfsmokes and the Bottomless Velikoff's Vodka bottles! Bless the maker and his water, bless the coming and going of him, may his passing cleanse the world.

And how is this possible? For he is the quisatz haderach!

I think it's funny that everyone is calling Pepsi lazy and unimaginative when their old logo was pretty damn similar to the new one. Sure, the new one is almost identical to the Obama campaign's, but it's not like the old one was a green and black box. They went from a red, white and blue circular logo to -- shocker -- a more modern red, white and blue circular logo.

The "HOPE" signs, however, are clearly trying to capitalize on the Obamapocalypse.

Are we getting free Pepsi drinks? I like that part about FREE. No strings attached except the high corn fructose syrup, but if it's a free drink. I'm all for it. We will all be your consumer whores. Yes! We drink Pepsi! Now, where's my free drink you S.O.Beez!

The high fructose corn syrup is also cursed.

HYPE: the choice of the new generation.

I'm boycotting Pepsi. I'm tired of all the Obama nutjobs. Cult of Personality anyone? I had my fill with Hitler, Stalin, and Mao thank-you-very-much.
