MUSIC: Top stop for local music tonight is a record release party for The Andalusians at the Black Cat backstage. Fellow D.C. acts Statehood and Played Tomorrow lend their support. $8, 9 p.m.

ART: The Phillips Collection's Phillips After 5 is back tonight. This month's event features a panel on poetry and hip-hop starting at 6:30 p.m., plus two gallery talks, at 6 and 7 p.m., on Jacob Lawrence's work, and in between enjoy tunes by DJ Adrian Loving. Free with museum admission, which is $12. Doors open at 5 p.m.

MUSIC: Asylum hosts Cake & Kisses, which does indeed promise free cake and cookies along with performances from Afropunk and hip-hop outfits like The Five One, G-Five Clive, and Nate Greyski. 9 p.m.

LECTURE: Science geeks should head to the Navy Memorial tonight for a discussion with Norwegian solar physicist Pål Brekke titled, Northern Lights: A Message from the Sun from 6:45 to 9 p.m. $40.

CLASSICAL: Looking for something a little different? The Austrian Cultural Forum is hosting a free concert tonight by flutist Ulike Anton and pianist Russell Ryan at the Austrian Embassy. 7:30 p.m. RSVP required: 202-895-6776.

Mmmm.... cake. Mmmm... kisses.

i guess i stumbled upon that cake & kisses night at asylum last month. i'll tell you what, everyone was very welcoming (to a bunch of strangers) and the music was good. i was sold w/ a hip hop take on the white stripes' "i think i smell a rat."
