Accident at Mt. Pleasant and Irving Streets NW

An anonymous reader writes in: "Passed a huge accident on Mt. P and Irving on my way home tonight. From what I could tell, a UPS truck had rammed a blue sedan, hard. The left side of the car was completely crushed and a crew was trying to extract whoever was inside as I passed. The two blocks of Irving between 16th and 17th were blocked off, and there were several fire trucks, police cars, and an ambulance on the scene. Cops were asking witnesses what they saw." Keep the possibility of street closures in this area in mind as you make your way home tonight.

A UPS driver hit someone?

If someone is near the accident, please give the injured driver my card.

UPS has excellent insurance. Remind the driver how much his back hurts.

Disclaimer - I'm NOT a reporter.

I heard the huge smash. Ran out to see if people were OK, and cops were already there (within 30 seconds)!!! From what I hear at the scene, the smashed car were cops on their way to help out colleagues just down the street. The word I heard (and it makes sense) was that the UPS guy had the right of way (green light), heading east on Irving crossing Mt. Pleasant. It seems the cops, in an unmarked car, were speeding north through the light. I didn't hear any sirens before the smash, so perhaps the UPS guy was expected to have seen a blue car speeding down Mt. Pleasant street, through a red light. Again, I might be wrong on this, but that was the story that spectators had put together after 15 min. Spectators are always right, too. ;-)

The UPS driver was completely fine, and it appeared that the guys in the car were conscious and moving, but they did tear that car apart with the jaws o' life and immobilize the guys in it as they ambulanced them away.

Either way, we're lucky if nobody was seriously hurt. The blue car ended up on a sidewalk that is heavily used (by pedestrians).

sounds like everyone involved is lucky.

i often wonder how we don't have more police car vs. something else accidents in this city. they blast through a lot of lights and intersections, and most other people either have their music up so loud or are just in such a zone that they hardly notice traffic moving in expected ways. when a cop car blasts through against the grain, they're taking their lives in their hands...

Ah... this wouldn't be the first time a cop car was t-boned for running a red light...

Any emergency vehicles are required by law to stop at the red light, then proceed with caution. Obviously, they never do this.

DC bought me a new car two years ago.

Damn. That's right by my liquor store! I was wondering what was going on.

I see sirenless speeding cops all the time.

Yep, you're required to stop & roll through the red light as an emergency vehicle - AND in most jurisdictions you're not even an emergency vehicle until the lights and sirens are on.

Instead of this fine legal distinction, however, many FD vehicles rely on the "facts on the ground" strategy - that is, "We may or may not be *required* to stop at this intersection. However, we can all agree right now that this vehicle weighs 45,000 pounds, begins at approximately windshield height, and is rocking 65 mph." About every 6 years, one of the engines or rescue squads at our station is forced to provide a practical demonstration of this to someone.
