D.C. Council member David Catania (I-At-Large) has announced that he has accepted a position as a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS).
"I am very excited about the opportunity to teach at the GW School of Public Health; I look forward to sharing our experiences in the District of Columbia with the students," Catania said in a statement. "The number and complexity of the health care challenges that we confront in the District are fascinating subjects for advanced study in health policy."
SPHHS is the only public health school in D.C. According to a press release, Catania will host periodic lecturers on issues of importance in health, law and policy for law students, graduate students and PhD candidates in the Public Health and Policy program.
Could the move be read as a signal that Catania is setting up a post-Council life for himself, and won't be running for re-election? Hard to say: the Council member's office did make a point of mentioning that he will not be paid for his teaching position, in order to avoid any conflict of interest. Catania was last elected in 2006, and is up for re-election in 2010.

Someone forgot to close the em> tag!
"Could the move be read as a signal that Catania is setting up a post-Council life for himself, and won't be running for re-election?"
Please please PLEASE let this be the case. Catania is quite intelligent and could probably accomplish something meaningful in life if he were to work in a setting where he would be less prone to outbursts of petty bitchiness.
G-Dub has a top 20 public health program, so that's a pretty good gig.
#1 for health policy
Alright, I guess I'm going to be the one that does this. Hold your comments on pretentiousness, please.
It's THE George Washington University. Very much official. In the Alma Mater etc. etc.
All the more reason to leave that headline as is. Or go with something more truthful, e.g., "The University That Cranks out Unprepared, Self-Involved, Slack Jawed Graduates That I Wouldn't Hire This Decade or Next." Really, you should see some of the resumes forwarded by GW kids. I think they're allergic to SpellCheck and proper grammar. Their interviewing "techniques" leave a bit to be desired, too. Cut an interview short last week when soon-to-be GW grad checked his cell phone three times in the first five minutes. Good luck with that, son! At least his resume was better than most of his peers' efforts, although still the best of a bad lot, to be sure.
WifeRat teaches at GWU and doesn't think much of the student body there either. Lots of obnoxious rich kids driving cars that cost more than I make in a year.
From a financial perspective, that's a situation that universities would want to encourage. Poor kids have poor parents and neither tend to contribute when alumin fundraising time rolls around. And it's not just a GWU thing, either. An affluent town tends to attract affluent students, by which I mean a$$holes.
it's G-Dub to me...
He'd probably be a real dick as a professor. Remember that 911-call issue?
