Council Passes Auto Snow Removal Bill, But No Fine

2009_0203_snocar.jpgD.C. Wire's Nikita Stewart reports from the D.C. Council's legislative session that the Council has unanimously approved emergency legislation to require drivers to remove frozen snow and ice from their vehicles. However the bill, introduced by Ward 5's Harry Thomas Jr., was amended to eliminate a $50 fine, instead opting to have police issue drivers a warning. So for the next 90 days, know that if we get another real winter storm and you fail to clear ice and snow from the roof or hood of your vehicle, you could be subject to a stern talking to from a D.C. police officer. Another law with no teeth. Great. At least this shook itself out relatively quickly, meaning that there's more time to legislate more important issues.

I'd be careful. Some of the DC police officers can use some pretty harsh language. I saw one trying to chase a guy with a sack with dollar signs painted on it. Out of breath, the cop gave up, snapped his fingers and yelled, "Aw, raspberries!" I nearly dropped my monocle into my martini, I was so shocked! The bluehaired dowager next to me fainted, so I had to give her some smelling salts. But not until I'd had my way with her!

Tune in for next week's episode: Banging Unconscious Old Ladies in Opera Gloves.

Can we get an bill to finally require drivers to remove their "W" bumper stickers? I feel much worse chills from the message those stickers promote than I would from a whole pile of snow sliding off a car and burying me in the middle of a crosswalk on a cold winter day.

Hilarious. No fine? Why bother? And does anyone think a DC cop is actually going to even bother with the ticket?

You were expecting something else from the all-singing, all-dancing overpaid notary publics?

while we're at it, can we get some laws passed that will allow me to glare at people whose choice of hat i dislike?

I want a law that allows cockpunching as a legitimate form of worship. That way I could legally "pray" while waiting in line behind old people buying crap with checks and pennies and get tax exempt status.

What about my pony? Do I have to clear off the snow and ice on my pony? Or will a police officer molest ... umm, I mean arrest my pony?

Does this law apply to driving a vehicle with snow on it, or a stationary vehicle? Neither the D.C. Wire article or the above blurb explains which it is.

Obviously one should remove snow from one's car before driving on the roads. Just as obviously there is no need to remove snow from a stationary vehicle.

If I had my way, American driving laws would be much more in line with the driving laws in Germany. That is, snow tires would be required in winter; cars with even a small amount of rust would not pass inspection; and passing on the right would be a crime.

it less the driving laws, if you ask me, than the training. we give basically anyone a license with a minimum of class time and experience (and at too young an age). if we would just tighten up the requirements to be a driver, i think we'd be in much better shape.
