Marion Barry Files His 2007 Tax Returns

WUSA9 reports that D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) filed his 2007 tax returns. Barry's 2007 state return was hand-delivered to the D.C. Tax office late Friday, and his federal return was delivered to the IRS office today. Earlier this month prosecutors asked a federal judge to jail Barry for failing once again to file a tax return, in violation of his parole. Barry has since said he failed to file because he was distracted by health problems, including an impending kidney transplant. Barry's attorneys reportedly have until Monday to tell the judge in writing why he should not have his probation revoked for failing to file on time again.

amazing that it's news when he does what he's supposed to do.

reminds me of chris rock:

"I ain't never been to jail!" What do you want, a cookie?! You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherfucker!

The real question - did he report his Metro extortion payout as 'income'?

Oh wait - that's 2008. So he'll be filing that sometime in 2011.

he's an easy target. but try to remember that he's doing the right thing by paying up--and unlike others, he never got rich as a politician. he ended up with a drug problem. he also took a bullet in the 70s trying to defuse a hostage situation in downtown dc. folks who didn't live here then (or weren't born then) are ignorant of his history and love to take cheap shots at him.
not to excuse any wrongdoing on his part, but take the time to learn a little about him before you ridicule him too much.

dccomments: i've read dream city, i know all about mr. barry's heroic exploits. don't lecture me about it, and please don't tell me i can't criticize someone who can't seem to stay on the right side of the law to save his life.

He's an easy target because he's a self-absorbed prick that single-handedly destroyed a great American city. He rose to power by grinding the city into chaos, stocking every agency with his worthless cronies, encouraging class and race warfare, and developing a victim entitlement mentality that has done lasting damage to generations of the very people he claimed to be helping.

Easy target, my ass. They guy is hubris, arrogance, and selfishness personified.

Oh, yeah, he's a fucking saint! You forgot among his good qualities, he may not have shot anyone.

I lived here in the 1970s. I remember watching the Hanafi Muslim siege of the District Building go down on Channel 9 as a kid. I also remember him vacationing in the Bahamas when the city was buried in snow, handing out choice contracts to cronies. I remember him doing NOTHING to stop the crack epidemic, bragging about how he personally knew "Jimmy" the 80-year-old heroin addict from Janet Cooke's fake Washington Post story, and having all the powers of the Mayor stripped away by Congress because he was a corrupt, racebaiting ass who was ruining himself and taking the city with him. Most of us are well aware of Barry's history, good and bad, thank you very much.

Although I agree with you. Conscious decisions to destroy your life and ruin the city you're supposed to serve shouldn't be met with cheap shots. They should be met with jail time.

I remember him doing NOTHING to stop the crack epidemic

You're kidding, right? Have you forgotten how much crack he personally kept out of other people's hands? If I'd tried to do even half as much as Barry did during the crack epidemic, I'd be dead.

Let's not forget Barry snorting coke off the tables at the Butterfly Club while saying the phrase "Honkey Mother F'er" at the end of every sentence.

To be fair, I think most of us are guilty of that as well. Rare is the day I go without yelling "Honkey Mother F'er" a half dozen times before lunch. Although, I have found that it helps ensure prompt service at The Palm.
