Straight from WUSA9's 5 p.m. broadcast, Bruce Johnson reports that Marion Barry says he needs a kidney transplant. "I was just distracted, to be frank with you," Barry said of his failure to file his 2007 tax returns. The risk of jail time "wasn't an issue" in Barry's mind, he said, since the last time this came up, a judge threw out prosecutors's request to imprison the Ward 8 Council member for violating his parole. Johnson promised to follow up on Barry's health problems. Kidney failure can be caused by a number of medical conditions. UPDATE: The 72-year-old Barry confirms in additional footage that his kidney failure is the result of his diabetes. A donor has been reportedly found, and Barry is awaiting a date for the surgery.

The kidney set him up.
*sigh*
If you think it's time Councilmember Barry learns he isn't invincible, please call Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Zeno at 202-514-6957 to voice your support. If you have a council person other than Barry, please be in touch with them as well regarding your opinion on the matter.
You can also tell DC Council Chair Vincent Gray that Marion Barry should lose his council seat. he has had too many second chances: (202) 724-8032.
People can also call Judge Robinson at Chambers:

Courtroom Deputy:
Lorita Miller (202) 354-3167
basic human compassion says that i should feel bad for someone who's that ill.
that said, if that's the case, then, by all means, the man should get help and get healthy, and he should STEP DOWN AND LET SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T HAVE THESE ISSUES represent ward 8.
And I suppose this has NOTHING to do with all the children found in bathtubs full of ice AND MISSING THEIR KIDNEYS.
What this town needs is a cross between Eliot Ness and Dr. Van Helsing. Throw in some Captain Nemo for good measure. And a pony.
Interesting. Remember Robert Novak who was diagnosed with a brain tumor a week or so after he ran over a bicyclist last summer? And now Barry who failed to file his tax return because he needs a kidney transplant.
Maybe these medical conditions are responsible for a lot of things ... the credit crisis, killer wildfires in Australia, and a dry cleaner who loses your pants!
So I'm assuming there's no laws preventing serial tax cheats from holding public office in DC? Clearly, convicted felons and practitioners of cannibalistic infanticide can be re-elected.
Ward 8 has needed a Councilman transplant for a couple years now. Senile old racebaiting batfart relics like Barry and Guyot need to go. If they were so concerned about their constiuencies, they would have left the political stage a long time ago. Instead, the sole purpose they serve is to give neocons a target to throw things at. "DC wants voting rights? That's insane! THEY'D JUST ELECT MARION BARRY A SENATOR!" Game over, man. Take your kidney and get the hell off the stage before someone calls for a meathook.
Uh, were his lawyers/accountants distracted as well?
This is weak. Even for Barry.
There's more to this. Maybe the Feds know something incriminating about him and are waiting for him to file the tax returns so it's official. Probably some scam funds he got and it's not illegal until he refuses to declare them.
If they found a liver for a coked up walrus like David Crosby, there must be a kidney for this waste of space. He should add a new level of excellence to his campaign committee: Silver Circle for donors at the $250 level, Gold Circle at $500, and the new Platinum Circle for donations of a vital organ or bone marrow.
There's hospitals in prison.
How about we just let him die?
Councilman Gray's office is sending out these emails in response to emails asking for Barry's removal:
Thank you for sharing your views with Chairman Gray. The Councildoes not have the authority to remove one of its members. Only the registered
voters of Ward 8 can initiate a recall of their
Councilmember. And, under the home rule act, a member cannot be recalled in the first 365 days of his
current term. CM Barry’s current
term began January 2, 2009. I would
encourage you to share your views
with CM Barry as well.

Office of Chairman Vincent C. Gray

so a councilmember could go on a full-on killing spree, as long as it's on the 364th day of their term, and there'd be no way for the voters to remove that murderous felon from office?
fan-fucking-tastic, DC? why the hell do we have that rule on the books?
Well, there would be no way for the voters to remove him from office on that very same day, but as long as they were willing to wait two days they'd be fine to go ahead. It doesn't say you can't be removed for conduct that occurs during the first 365 days, just that the recall itself can't take place during that window.
Ok - let me understand this. 2007 tax filings were due on 15 April 2008. Since that date, Councilman Barry has been so preoccupied with his liver that he just hasn't had time to submit a simple form that would probably give him a refund! So every day for almost a YEAR that we've seen Mr. Barry out and about, being pompous and arrogant, he was so worried about his health that he couldn't file his tax form? I'm thinking that he will never quite get this right and snub his nose at his requirements. Some things never change.
See, I told yall taxes are more certain than death.
