WMATA put out a press release this afternoon announcing that Metro's board has finally given the go ahead on a plan to build a new network that will allow companies besides Verizon to offer cell phone access in stations and tunnels. A contract has been awarded that will allow Verizon, Sprint Nextel, AT&T and T-Mobile to build a new wireless network inside the Metro system over the next four years, which would also eventually include wireless internet. In order to comply with rules written into a $1.5 billion funding package passed by Congress last fall, 20 of the busiest underground rail stations will have "expanded cell phone service" by the end of 2009.

Bring it on! Can't wait to see the day we get AT&T coverage (hopefully 3G) in the system. According to the press release it sounds like Verizon will be doing upgrades as well, hopefully they bring EVDO for those who want BroadbandAccess. Currently Verizon is still stuck in the old days of 1xrtt. (Better than nothing of course...) Got me by on my VZW BlackBerry until I switched to AT&T for the iPhone. As for the supposed WiFi, that's just an added bonus!

Ummm....listen, I want 3G AT&T access in the Metro as much as the next guy, but I feel like the last thing we need is more snooty suits flapping their gums on and on with clients or colleagues about who knows what in an attempt to flaunt how important they really are. I feel like this will be more bad than good :-(

I read this news with dismay. Why do people fell the need to be constantly on cellphones, blackberries etc. I was on the train recently from new york to DC and the man in the seat in front of me was on his phone for the ENTIRE trip. Is that really necessary? The last thing we need on our metro rides is more people yelling into their phones. Read a book! Take a nap! Breath or rest your mind!
