S Street Dog Park Groundbreaking Nets Mayoral Support

How big of a deal are doggie politics to D.C. residents? Big enough to cause D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Ward 2 Council member Jack Evans to show up for the groundbreaking at the new S Street Dog Park. Flickr user maxedaperture stopped by the ceremony yesterday and snagged a few good shots. The triangle park at 17th and S Streets NW had been an unofficial dog park for years, and the city finally approved turning it into an officially sanctioned dog park last summer.

So they are really tearing up the whole place. Didn't know so much effort was required to convert what was essentially already a dog park into a legitimate dog park.

jack jacobson, local anc commissioner, is second from left.

Ugh. This event may be the highlight Fenty's administration. This, or switching DC taxis to a meter system only to later cave on tons of additional fees, effectively leaving us in the same exorbirant taxi fare bracket from which we began.

Go Fenty! You rock!

You might have a ligedimate gripe there but considering the fact that in the Disctric, you have access to Metro Bus, Rail and the option to walk to some locations; your argument kinda falls short. Simply put you have options, you are not being forced to taxi to your destinations.

There is no Metro stop in my neighborhood at all so, no, I don't have access to the Metro. And there is no Metrobus stop right outside my door...its several blocks. Additionally, the bus service is quite infrequent in the evening and weekends so scratch that. I do own an automobile but it’s often easier to taxi as there will be no parking at my destination anyway. So, believe it or not, there are pockets of DC where Metro/Metrobus is not a viable option.

Furthermore, I just don’t understand the reasoning Fenty used to force all the taxi drivers to upgrade their cars with meters when the end result was the same: unacceptably high taxi fares. Seems like a lot of work, and expense, for nothing. I often wonder what, if anything, Fenty has going on upstairs.

Face it, Fenty is a puppet that just shows up to get his picture taken. In reality, he has done nothing to improve life in DC. But his hat collection sure is cute....

Personally don't understand the hate that people feel for dog owners. We had the same problem in Arlington a few years ago where parents were fighting to keep the County from turning an underused playground into a dog park. Fact of the matter is that playground was rarely used because parents don't take their kids out and if the kids are old enough to go on their own just stay indoors and play video games but parents are adamant in their argument but County officials recognized that there are far more playgrounds in Arlington than dog parks and pet owners pay taxes just as parents and their needs should be met as well.

Personally don't understand the hate that people feel for dog owners.

Do you understand the hate some kid-free people feel toward kid owners? It's kinda like that, except with more poo/facelicking involved.

Oh ok, now I understand. So I’m guessing you have some sorta issue with poo/face-licking huh? Well you have to understand that it’s in their nature to do that and in the case of face-licking, it’s a sign of affection! It’s kinda like when a person attempts to cut in line, run a red light, disregard parking restrictions or download free music despite it being illegal.

Humans justify their actions because it benefits them alone but the fact is; its human nature to seek out opportunities most advantageous to number 1. Ya know....it’s in our nature. The difference between dogs however, is that they don't have to justify their actions because they happily accept their position in the natural order of things, unlike those fuckin humans!

I thought parks are for people. Who (may) even pay taxes.

I guess they'll cut down all the trees to start over, huh? That's what the "artist rendering" shows on the fences keeping us people out of the parks.

Dog Parks are for lazy people. Take your dog to Rock Creek Park and let him get some real exercise. Trust me - your dog and your ever-expanding-mr-pibb-and-red-vines-twitterblogging ass will thank you for it.

Keep building these dog ghettoes Mayor Fenty - no self-respecting dog owner is going to use them.

Pretty sure the dog parks are for the folks who don't have the time to haul their asses all the way to Rock Creek Park and do it proper-like. Kind of a long walk from 17th and S, and driving your dog to Rock Creek kinda defeats the purpose.

And "self-respecting dog owner" is an oxymoron. They eat their own poo then try and lick your face.

And the dogs are pretty unhygenic as well.

LRon- then there must be a whole lot of dog owners in that neck of the woods severely lacking in self-respect (though I don't know what that has to do with where you take your dog for a walk anyway), because that dog park is already heavily used. There are tons of dogs and people in it every day when I ride by after work. I imagine once they've made dog park-specific improvements, that usage will only increase.

dog parks are the ultimate in official discrimination, using taxpayer money to disproportionately benefit a very small (but obnoxiously vocal) part of the population.

I agree. There are very few dog filth free grassy places in the city.

These "breaking ground" photo ops are phenomenally cheesy. Especially for a dog park. I mean, seriously. Dogs? Shouldn't Fenty be working on something?

He is working on something -- the next election

That picture reminds me of season 3 (first episode, I think) of The Wire.

This park renovation was pretty well thought out. Well, apart from the temporary fencing that was blown over onto a row of parked cars this morning.

Some people have dogs, not children. Why shouldn't their tax dollars go to something they might use, like a dog park, rather than a school or playground they have no use for? I happily pay my taxes to support schools, please don't misunderstand, but I would like to see some small thing for my tax dollars that is useful to me.
