Senate Votes to Proceed on S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act

In case you missed the news at the bottom of our live blog, the U.S. Senate has just voted to proceed on S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act, 62-34, which would grant the District a voting member in the U.S. House, as well as an additional House member to Utah. Some of the key votes that helped avoid a filibuster this time included Republicans Thad Cochran (MS) and Lisa Murkowski (AK), who both switched their votes from nay to yea. The Senate has now moved on to the Hilda Solis confirmation, but earlier this morning, Majority Leader Harry Reid proposed to take up a vote on S.160 itself sometime after the Solis vote early this evening. It remains to be seen whether that will actually happen today.

If this passes, I'm buying everyone in this thread a drink...and 47 straws!

I'm also going to celebrate by washing my ass with that nice perfumed soap I stole from the Knoxville Hilton, instead of the usual Lava soap.

awesome, awesome news. now, we can get this passed, get obama to sign off, and then, if the haters want to challenge its constitutionality (which i would welcome), we can finally get a ruling on this.

if it doesn't pass that muster, at least we'll finally know, and we won't have to worry about listening to people bloviate about it for the rest of our goddamned lives!

then we can move on to try the other avenues left to gain representation.

Is it too early to contribute to the Draft Marion Barry for Senate campaign? I'm willing to donate the remaining value on my Metro card, what's left in my kid's piggy bank, and the contents of my bladder.

I'll kick in an extra kidney. Never hurts to have a spare.

Too soon?

What on Earth will we then talk about if this passes?

State Bird: Little Cuckoo Coccycua minuta
State Tree: Hackberry Celtis marionus laevigata
State Insect: Giant Prickly Stick Extatosoma tiaratum
State Song: "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" ~ Good Charlotte
State Minerial: Barylite
State Reptile: Many-lined Skink Eumeces multivirgatus

Based on all the posts here, shouldn't the city's be a ginko?

i get that that list is a joke, but we already have a tree—the scarlet oak. check out the sculpture outside the ny ave. metro station.

Still would rather have FiOS. This is good too though.
