As momentum builds in Hollywood for the Academy Awards, Tracy's Kids, a local charitable program for children with cancer, held their own movie-themed gala on Tuesday night. Politicos, corporate honchos, and other benevolent Washington types filled Lucky Strike for a reception before taking the escalator upstairs to the Regal Gallery Place cinemas to see one of six Oscar nominated films.
Gallery Place may have tried to emulate the red carpet outside the Kodak Theater, but instead of Brad Pitt, the most accomplished actor in the room was Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who had a speaking role in The Dark Knight. Biggest award winner? Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.). The 2008 Republican presidential nominee was on hand to receive the Courage Award as a cancer survivor who "exemplifies the strength, dignity, and perseverance necessary to face those daily challenges" that Tracy's Kids face.
McCain did not stay for a movie; he had another event to attend. Leahy, looked over for that Best Supporting Actor nod from the Academy, had to return to the Hill to work on the stimulus bill.
Who are Tracy's Kids? Children in the program are cancer patients at one of four local hospitals in Washington and northern Virginia. Kids participate in art therapy as part of their treatment inside and out of the hospital setting. Founded in 1991, it is a program of the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
