Wagamama Sets Opening Date For Old Olsson's Location

The Washington Business Journal is confirming that Wagamama, the British-based ramen chain who has a bit of a cult following amongst the cheap noodle and beer-loving among us, will be officially opening at 418 7th St. NW in May 2010. It was no real surprise (after all, we had an inkling this would happen back in June 2008), but it does serve as confirmation that we're still a long time away from eating Wagamama for lunch. The news also serves as a chance to reflect on the loss of the revered local media chain, which has been gone for seven months now. Did anyone even realize that it had been so long since Olsson's shuttered its doors?

Ugh. Wagamama ain't worth the loss of Olsson's.

Having just been past the site earlier this week, I'm pretty sure that's a typo on the staff writer's part at the WBJ. They've already got an ABC application in the window, and not only that, but when I emailed their customer service reps a few months back, they gave me a May 2009 opening date.

When I emailed their customer service department a few months back, I was given an official opening date of May 2009. Having just been past the site this week, I can tell you they've already got their ABC application posted, and it looked like they were in the early stages of buildout. While I suppose it's possible they might be paying to sit on the site for over a year, I highly doubt it. Methinks the staff writer at WBJ either misunderstood or made a typographical error.

And anyone who actually believes that it will open in May hasn't been around D.C. for too long. The archaic and inefficient permitting processes for commercial construction in this city almost guarantee a delay of six months to a year.

It will open eventually and that's the point. We know that D.C.'s permitting bureaucracy is only slightly slower tha Nigeria's so what else is new? Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme merde...

Wagamama's is awesome - I for one cannot wait for a bowl of their chili beef ramen.

may 2010 seems a long way off, may this year sounds reasonable, but yeah, DC permitting ain't reasonable.

get ready for a fall opening...

Just got off the phone with their reps in London. 2010 is definitely right. No word on the reason for the delay.
