Today Mayor Fenty and DMV Director Lucinda Babers announced the launch of a new email notification service that reminds D.C. residents to renew their driver's licenses and vehicle registrations online. To sign up for the service, visit the D.C. DMV web site, go to "Online Services", and then click “Add/Update E-mail Address”. You'll need to enter your driver's license number, full name, SSN and DOB, and then activate your account via an email confirmation. Once you're signed up, the DMV will email you alerts within 60 days of the expiration date to renew your vehicle registration, driver’s license or ID card.

This is a scam. I signed up with my email address and, almost immediately, my email box was flooded with offers to "IMPRESS HER WITH YOUR HUGE C*MSHOT!" and "ADD THREE TERRIFYING INCHES TO YOUR WANG!"
I'm not buying unless I get nine terrifying inches. And a pony.
im not sure doing this is entirely necessary. I got my license a long time ago, and they must have asked for email back then. because i just logged into the site to sign up for updates...but it says on the form i already am signed up for updates and they already have my email address...i dont want to submit again, because i have a weird feeling they'll duplicate my voter registration, and that will just cause problems
Ha, I laugh every time I see those two words "voter registration." Meaningless!
Well, how about something just a little more useful like email alerts when streets in your neighborhood will be closed to parking for emergencies? Or how about email alerts when your vehicle gets a ticket?
yeah, i don't think i want to put all of that info (especially my SSN) into a database that is available over the internet. guarantee it'll get hacked—guarantee it.
your info is all already in that database. its just looking it up for you when you enter in your info and showing it to you on the next screen.
(resubmitting because apparently "too many comments have been submitted from [me] in a short period of time." damn, i know i have a big mouth, but if you want me to stifle it, dcist, just say so!) :P
hungeegirl: yeah, but i don't know how secure their entry forms are, even, so i'm going to avoid putting my SSN out there where it could potentially be intercepted by who knows whom...
For this to work they'd have not to lose your registration. If it hadn't happened to me I wouldn't think it possible. I went to renew my tag after getting pulled over for its expiration (after getting no notice), and they didn't have my tag number in the system at all. They had a record with my VIN, but no tag associated with it.
I love trashing the DMV as much as the next DC resident, but the last time I had to renew my driver's license I got a mail notification about two months earlier and was able to go online and renew my license in about 90 seconds. Since I doubt they will stop sending the mail notifications, I'm fine with things just as they are.
My DMV experiences were bad the first couple years I lived here, but have been mostly good since then. I'm not looking forward to the next one, though, since I'm pretty sure my car registration is fouled up due to an insurance SNAFU (they sent me notice that my insurance was no good a month after I'd gotten a different policy number, I sent in the paperwork - including their letter, as they said to do - and a month later I got another letter saying I was in truh-buullll, and to get out of it I should send something to the address included in the first letter (and perversely not included in the second one) ... which I no longer had, having sent it in as I was supposed to do.
I called, got transferred into what appeared to be the right voicemail box, left a message, and haven't heard a peep.
