D.C.'s retail employees breathed a sigh of relief over the weekend after a suspect was arrested in a string of robberies that targeted lone cashiers, often women, over the last several weeks. But now police say that another, similar robbery occurred today at the CVS at 2129 14th Street NW, at W Street.

Police say that a preliminary investigation reveals that a man entered the CVS just after 3 p.m. and obtained an undetermined amount of cash from a female cashier in the rear of the store before making a successful escape from the scene. No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made. The suspect is described as a medium complexioned black male in his mid-30s, approximately 5’4” tall. It's not known whether the suspect was armed.

The suspect in the previous robberies, for which 29-year-old Ezra Mathis was arrested, was described as a light complexioned black male in his late 30s, approximately 6'2" to 6'4" tall.

And given the sad state of our economy, crimes of opportunity such as this one will continue to become commonplace. And I’d also venture to guess muggings and robberies are up as well, though I don’t have statistics to support this assertion.

Then again, this is DC. It’s not like this city is a stranger to effed-up crime rates. Time will tell…..watch your back!

That CVS has a crazy layout. You could probably rob the cashier, slowly browse the aisles for shampoo and cough drops, then casually walk up to the front and out the door, and no one would have any idea. There is absolutely no visibility to the doors or the front counter from the back.
