The National Cherry Blossom Festival formally kicks off tomorrow, with all that the first weekend of the celebration entails.
On Saturday, there's the Opening Day ceremony and Family Day event at the National Building Museum, plus the ever-popular Smithsonian Kite Festival at the Washington Monument.
On Sunday, the Lantern Lighting Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Tidal Basin.
The one thing agoraphobic cherry blossom lovers will have going for them this weekend is that the weather forecast isn't shaping up to be especially nice. Festival organizers may be predicting a more crowded event than ever before, but you could do well to try to get down to the Mall while it's a little chillier and soggier than your average tourist is likely to brave.
Metro will operate on a special schedule to accommodate crowds during the entire festival, adding additional eight-car trains weekdays and weekends.

And Now, 10-20 Inches

Hey. I like the Cherry Blossom crowds. It is the only time the Indians come in from the suburbs to "enjoy" something DC has to offer. As a fellow Indian choosing to live in DC, that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
But they, like all tourists, better stand on the right side of the escalator!
let's all of us non-Indians go out to Herndon this weekend and enjoy what there is to do out there. perhaps eat at the Olive Garden? i could go for some chicken marsala vindaloo.
Yeah you kid, but the only place to get some decent Indian food is in burbs. Herndon has its fair share.
Mayuri beats the hell out of Bombay Bistro. Or should I say Bombay CHOLERA EPIDEMIC.
Dude, why bother going to Herndon? You've got Fados, Fuddruckers, Ruby Tuesdays, and TGI Mcpickleshitters in Penn Quarter.
DC has met the stripmall enemy and the enemy is DC.
Dude, why bother going to Herndon?
i couldn't have said it better myself.
I only go to Herndon to pretend to be handicapped, pick up women in rest stops, chloroform them, and bury them alive in my basement. That, and the Indian food.
Beware, heroes have a tendency to be extreme.
Any way we can transport some Columbia Heights teenagers to the Tidal Basin so they can throw rocks at people who pick the cherry blossoms?
That's the kind of ingenious thinking we need. How soon can we get this program up and running?

Blossoms bright and pink
Tourists jack up our traffic
I’ll avoid the mall
I can't believe tourist season is back already. It seems like I only just got the bumpkin smell out of my work shirts.
{lights cigarette}
Oh for the love of Kilroy! I can't be expected to {deep drag on cigarette, exhale quickly} leave my luxurious McMansion in my upscale suburban neighborhood to rub elbows with the {deep drag on cigarette, exhale quickly} lumpen proletariat for the sole purpose of gazing upon beautiful living things! {deep drag on cigarette, exhale quickly}
I'm completely upside-down on my mortgage for this place, and the blame rests firmly upon the shoulders of the {deep drag on cigarette, exhale quickly} lumpen proletariat whom I am likely to encounter while strolling around the Tidal Basin this weekend. SCREW THAT! I'm Better Than Those "people"! You know because I told you so, and because my mortgage is train wreck in the making.. {deep, deep, deep drag on cigarette, exhale slowly}
Good, god I could really use a cigarette right now.
For Indian food, you can't beat Haandi. Both the Falls Church and Bethesda locations are outstanding and they have been awarded a lot of accolades, including "best Indian restaurant on the east coast." That may be a stretch but it is the best I've had stateside.

Speaking of Indian food, I really like Fry Bread and Plank-Baked Fish.
