Caps Briefing: Reserved Style

Flamboyant Canadian hockey commentator Don Cherry
Canadian television personality Don Cherry grabbed some press this weekend for saying that Alexander Ovechkin celebrates his goals with too much exuberance. Cherry said he favors the Canadian way. Don Cherry is famous for making inflammatory statements while wearing suits in which Elton John would not be caught dead.

Cherry's absurd assault on the NHL's reigning scoring champion and most valuable player follows criticism of Ovechkin by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby, who has sat out three games since Ovechkin hit him legally in a Caps victory. Crosby publicly criticized Ovechkin for trying to hurt his head, but his injury is listed as a groin injury. Makes us wonder where Crosby's head is. Incidentally, the Penguins have climbed back into playoff contention with the resulting three game winning streak--their longest since November.

Meanwhile, the Capitals have benched Michael Nylander for three straight games. Nylander is earning $5.5 million this season. The Capitals called up Jay Beagle, who has six points in the AHL this year, to take Nylander's place in yesterday's loss. Nylander, by contrast, has 27 points in the NHL this year. It seems the Caps want to encourage him to waive the no-trade clause in his contract so they can trade him for another expensive player before Wednesday's trade deadline. We're curious to see the situation unfold.

oh christ, i watched a lot of don cherry on CBC when i lived in michigan. while i miss his bombast for the mere entertainment value, we all need to keep in mind that this guy is a grade-A douchebag.

his douchebaggery exists solely as a counterpoint and balance to all the 30 million other nice canadians out there.

I have no idea who this guy is, but he looks exactly like the guy who tried to rob me using his finger as a pistol. I had to just walk away after he started going, "Pyoo! Pyoo!"

Canada's version of, say, Howard Cossell. Except louder, brasher, more obnoxious and much more xenophobic. Probably among the 5 to 10 most famous people in Canada, he's be on Hockey Night in Canada for decades [think Monday Night Football, except it's saturday and hockey and Canada, so much, much more of a national obsession].

Cherry is known to blatantly hate European skaters, as he considers them 'soft'. He prefers 'old-fashioned' hockey players who are 'humble' and 'play the game the right way' and don't celebrate after scoring. And yet he dresses worse than TNT's NBA sideline reporter Craig Sager. One of the most controversial figures for Canadians. Which I guess that in itself isn't saying much.

Beagle was called up to replace Kozlov whose groin tightened up during Boston's game.

Did he mug Tom Wolfe for that suit?

Didn't we fight a war so we wouldn't have to listen to the damn Canadians?!

don cherry is the voice of old time hockey in canada where players just did their thing in a quiet and classy way. classy like breaking a russian superstar's ankle on purpose with a two hander in a world championship game.

he's also the doc sevrinson of hockey. you guys could have found a pic of him in a much more ridiculous suit.

Cherry has it backward anyway. As we all know, Ovechkin was born in Soviet Russia, where goal celebrates YOU.

With that suit and that finger he looks like a bad Proctologist.

Seems all these 2 Canadians are good at doing is bitching while they should worry more about performance on the ice. The real reason for the bitching? Crosby, pushed so hard by the NHL while they seldomly mentioned OV, isn't even the best player on his team (Malkin), let alone the league (Ovechkin). Suck it, Frogs!
