We must be wusses-- because we caved after one off-hand comment from our lord and master. I too remember when 2 inches was the end of times, and now, I don't even think I saw one news reel of a fallen power line all day, could it be that the headline "snowpocalypse" will never be used again? Did Mr. Pres. bitch slap the snow-wuss culture right out of us in one season?
I just hope those cold loving masochists who always bitched about the time off are enjoying another long day at work. May they all work a 12 hour shift.
I know this is a joke, but the federal government has not had a day off due to snow since 2003. There have been a few 2 hour delays, a bunch of liberal leave days, and a couple early releases.
Hey NPGMBR - you don't get charged for the two hours. They're a gift courtesy of OPM and Mother Nature:
"When OPM announces a delayed arrival policy, non-emergency employees will be granted excused absence (administrative leave) for the designated number of hours past their normal arrival time."
We may be wusses but it was ridiculous to have business as usual today. The roads goddamn sucked and it was dumping all morning.
If it weren't for the fact that we are, in fact, wusses and everyone took liberal leave and stayed home anyway, it would have been an absolute disaster out there. Even with light traffic it took me forever to get to work and as usual, people were driving like morons. Almost got into 3 accidents in 5 miles.
I dunno: folks in Boston had roads that goddamn sucked a much higher level of suckitude than ours today, and few places were closed. People had to commute to work, etc., and they just shrugged their shoulders and kept moving.
So bravo to our mayor and his new Obamian overlord for keepin' DC real today. Maybe!
Do you really think that because Boston, a city that gets an average of 40 inches of snow every year, can handle itself in a storm, that we should be just as capable?
I'm not an apologist for snow wimps - I grew up in Maine. But people here don't know how to drive in snow, and we are not adequately equipped to keep the roads clear when it's falling quickly. This was one of the worst storms we've had in years. Every other jurisdiction closed schools except DC.
There were many accidents even though hardly anyone was driving. It's just lucky that so many people chose to stay home.
I'm sick of all the whining. Thousands of private-sector workers made it to work just fine using the same roads government workers use to get to work. Private sector doesn't close down because they have to worry about the bottom line. Given the deficit, government workers need to start worrying about the bottom line too.
It was wet it was slushy it was cold, it will be over in a day. Get over it.
Though it might "be over in a day," that's no excuse not to shovel and/or treat your sidewalks: those who didn't hav left Rinks Of Death® for pedestrians to battle this evening and tomorrow. It's not supposed to clear freezing until Wednesday.
And now it is official. Well done.
It's not official until we hear from either Campbell Brown or Heidi Montag.
davy needs a tan. that boy doesn't get outside much.
Brilliant work Davy boy.

He HAD to call us wusses. Well..I am at home, so I guess I'm a wuss warm under the blankets.
IMO it's even worse than that. His little girl called us wusses.
Love the comment, and I totally agree with the sentiment behind the flip-flopping. I was just ranting about that myself!
and by "comment," I so obviously meant COMIC. oops!
You perfectly expressed my sentiments.
I'm going to guess that Obama's poll numbers in the District dropped considerably today...
Best Davy DCist ever. This should be a tshirt or a monument or something like that.

Man doug...you sure are making the rounds!
So, the government hasn't had a day off for snow in awhile...we got it already. Damn.
It's a slow day I guess. ;) And it's something I've been pissed about for 5 years. ;)
I concue Doug and I'll add that those that take those two hours also get charged for it. But at least we can say we got some real snow this year.

You are right. I misinterpreted what the policy was.
Anyone who owns (or wishes to own) a Portugese Water Dog has no business calling anyone a wuss.

Hell ... if the minimum-wage workers show up for their shift at Starbucks, one could expect that the rest of us would suit up and show up, too!
I think I want to marry Davy DCist :)
