Hundreds Lined Up for Affordable Housing

2009_0312_line.jpgWe got a handful of emails this morning from Columbia Heights residents, asking about a long line they encountered along 14th Street NW at Harvard Street. It seems that a number of people had even camped out in the line the night before. NBC4 went to the scene this morning and reported that it was a line made of returning applicants for a number of open spaces in the Columbia Heights Village Apartments, the subsidized apartment building at that corner. DCist went by around 1 p.m., but by that time, the line was long gone. Is the line indicative of increased demand for public housing due to the state of the local economy? Sure feels like it, although District public housing pretty much always maintains a healthy waiting list.

as of about 9:30 last night there were about 20 people in line already. from the picture, looked like it was quite a scene this morning

With the rate scumbags are shooting each other around there, there will probably be a lot more openings in the apartments. Let's hope the management is screening for felonies among the residents and their families.

I don't think Columbia Heights Village is public housing.

It's not listed on the housing authority's list of public complexes in that part of town, and it is registered with DCRA as a limited partnership.

Don't be so quick to assume low-income housing is public housing.

Of course, it might be subsidized housing, but if a subsidy makes housing public, everybody who deducts mortgage interest is living in public housing.

It's probably on-site housing choice voucher, so the complex holds a set number of section 8 slots. Hence the line. The section 8 and public housing lists take years.
