New Baby Anteater Born at National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo today announced the birth of nature's most ridiculous looking animal, a giant anteater born Thursday, March 12. The birth marks only the second giant anteater ever to be born in the history of the Zoo. The Zoo doesn't know if it's a girl or a boy yet, and may not for some time until they can get a closer look.

Mom Maripi is reportedly taking to her maternal duties well (dad Dante will play no part in raising the baby), which is no big surprise, since Maripi gave birth to a girl, Aurora, back in 2007.

Don't rush over to the Zoo this weekend to catch a glimpse of the new animal: mother and baby will be kept away from the public for some time while they bond.

Hate to be morbid, but the odds are against that ugly little bastard.

Yeah, we DCist are big meat-eaters. I kid. I kid.

Who are you calling ridiculous?! Ever see what a baby human looks like? All shriveled and ugly is what. Anteaters are cute!

Asian and Black babies are cute. It's the white babies that look like that creepy guy from the Six Flags ads.

Is it just me or does that stupidly bright flash that the photographer is using seem irritating to that poor anteater?

Dude, it's an anteater. That's his nose, not a wang. You must have been looking at the picture upside-down.
