Pachyderm Parade Set for March 17

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is back at the Verizon Center March 18-22, and with it comes the annual parade of elephants through the city. The route for the animals will begin on Tuesday, March 17 at Garfield Park, then head north on 4th Street SE to Stanton Park, then west on Massachusetts Ave NE to Columbus Circle NW, then finally toward the Verizon Center via E Street NW, 3rd Street NW and G Street NW. If your home or office is near the walk route, tentatively mark your calendars for a 10 a.m. pachyderm parade start time (subject to change, call the Animal Walk Hotline, 1-866-683-3670, for updates that morning). Since the elephant walk is happening on St. Patrick's Day this year, the animals are indeed expected to wear green and bring along their own bagpipe player.

Thanks for the heads-up. Last year, the elephants actually walked up 3rd Street SE from Garfield Park to Pennsylvania Ave, SE. I suspect that they'll do the same this year. There's no reason for them to walk an extra block east before heading north.

This may be your only chance to see real, bonafide elephants in DC this year!

ugh. please don't support this. the circus and its cruelty towards these animals is appaling. i am no nut, trust me, but the conditions these poor elephants are kept in is heartbreaking.

Agreed. The animals in circuses are, by and large, treated VERY inhumanely. Anyone who knows anything about circuses will stay the hell away. I would like to see circuses go the way of the Dodo.

Personally, I don’t even care for zoos. But at least zoo animals are not crammed into tiny containers, packed onto trucks, brutalized trained to subserviently perform, marched through busy downtown streets and, finally, forced to perform night after night after night - all so you and your little rug-rats can have some entertainment at their expense. It’s sick; get your kicks elsewhere.

Agreed. The fact that this continues to be a tradition of cruelty is sad. The most interesting part of the event should be the protesters trying to humiliate the losers making money of the circus to stop.

I had under 3 posts in the animal-cruelty-protest-mention pool. You all owe me money.

They should put your first born in a circus. Then see how funny that shit is, insensitive prick.

Full marks to TX2DC for exposing this gross injustice. An elephant walk is a filthy enterprise be it forced upon frat pledges or actual elephants.

Insert GOP joke here.

I tried to make one.

But failed.

all jokes aside, this kind of thing can't have much of a half-life. circus elephants are going to be a thing of the past soon enough...

Fools! This is no circus. The Mûmakil have arrived. The Dark Lord is drawing his armies closer to Mordor. Soon all shall bow to his will and vote GM another $14 billion.

If it really was the Mûmakil, you'd really want them to take the Key Bridge instead. Most of us won't shed a tear when Georgetown falls - plus Dean and Deluca has all the organic spring mix an invading party of war elephants would ever need.

So is the several tons of elephant poop going to be green too?

depends what they are feeding them, I guess

If they've had the corned beef and cabbage from The Dubliner, you better believe it's gonna be green. And noisy, too. You know those impact air wrenches they use to get your wheels off your car? About like that, except it smells like cabbage and swamp water.

The circus walk is an accident waiting to happen. There have been incidents in the past in which the elephants have broken free and been gunned down in the streets. Is this a risk parents are willing to take for an afternoon of subpar entertainment?

It's a recession people, take your kids to a museum where they might learn something useful!

You've got lunatics with swords on Capitol Hill, McGruff the Crime Bitch getting junkpunched at random, and you're worried about elephant stampedes? Give it up, Smithers.

McGruff needs to toughen up, at least he doesn't have to worry about getting shot by babies.

youre telling me this has been happening every year, on an annual basis? i have never seen these elephants.

Hell with the elephants why not real ease a bunch of 15 year old chimps high on xanax. Now that would be interesting.

Who do you think will be riding the elephants? Timothy Q. Mouse?

Works for me plus maybe they will give them long polo mallets to use to strike people on their heads as they chase them.
