The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the leader of the Pakistani Taliban threatened today to carry out a terrorist attack in Washington, D.C. At the same time, Baitullah Mehsud claimed credit for an attack on a police academy in Pakistan.
"Soon we will launch an attack in Washington that will amaze everyone in the world," Mehsud told the Associated Press.
Mehsud is not generally considered to have the resources or ability to carry out an attack on U.S. soil. But, he is also believed to have ties to al Qaeda, so the resources at his disposal might be larger than just what's available to him Pakistan.
The Journal cites Pakistani and U.S. intelligence officials who told them Mehsud is also believed to have had a role in the December 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
The U.S. government has offered a $5 million reward for information that leads to Mehsud's capture.

Baitullah Mehsud was born in the early 1970s in Landi Dhok village in the Bannu District of the NWFP, which lies some distance from the Mehsud tribe's base in the South Waziristan Agency. He hails from the Broomikhel side of the Shabikhel sub-tribe of the Mehsud and is one of five brothers.

Not sure why this and the April weekend track work announcement are separate stories. WMATA and the Pakistani Taliban equally reject Western decadence; both have essentially promised an attack on Washington that will amaze everyone. I guess WMATA gets the page B1 treatment for specificity?
