A report prepared for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies concludes that "flaws and shortcomings in the planning process" combined with larger than expected crowds led to the chaos experienced by thousands of inauguration ticket holders. The Post covers the report's executive summary here. Other problems cited include insufficient signage, poor coordination and communication, and not enough personnel to help direct people to the correct lines. So what should be done to fix those problems next time? Better coordination from the top, and open the ticket gates at least an hour earlier. Also of note: the report "suggested that law enforcement officials monitor Twitter and Facebook to keep on top of developing problems."

"combined with larger than expected crowds"
What part of 4 Million visitors didn't they understand? And did they even count how many tickets they gave out?
File this one under the "blindingly obvious" tag.
So what should be done to fix those problems next time?
next time? unless Jesus himself gets elected, it's unlikely we'll see crowds like this again. oh, and is Jesus on Twitter?
Report Blames Poor
Typical government scapegoating. Let's blame the people least likely to defend themselves.
Planning for Inauguration Ticket Problems
I hope they fix this fiasco in time for the next innauguration. Because President Palin isn't going to look too kindly on this, you betcha.
Take that, Myspace!
It took them this long to realize everything went wrong? Also, I don't know what monitoring faceboogie and twttier is going to accomplish, I had no service down in that hell hole.
uh.. what about megaphones? Did the shipment arrive too late? I was surprised there weren't any- wondering if that had to do with the possibility of electronic interference but still.. Everyone had to weave through the crowd to find a policeman or marshall to find out what the hell was going on..
my friend gave his spare purple ticket to a girl he was trying to mack on and neither of them got in. needless to say my friend didn't get the girl either.
So what should be done to fix those problems next time?
Seal tunnel at both ends.
In future, I'd hope the innaugural committee would at least address the issues related to the comfort of the attendees who are forced to wait in that dank, dreary tunnel. Ticketholders should arrive in the entrance hall and be carried along the corridor on a conveyor belt in extreme comfort and past murals depicting Mediterranean scenes, towards the rotating knives. The last twenty feet of the corridor are heavily soundproofed. The blood pours down these chutes and the mangled flesh slurps into these...
Oh. Did slaughtering the attendees not fit in with their plans? I wish they would reconsider. Think of the tourist trade.
what about stupid people? Didn't stupid people play a big role in this?
Oh yeah. It might be something of a "chicken and the egg" scenario but it was amazing how idiotic people got without shepherding. On top of that, and I don't know if this was stupidity or arrogance but I was floored at the amount of people with no tickets or anything who thought they could just walk up and get in or worse, they knew it was tickets only but though they could get in.
Given the way bureaucrats operate, in 2013, someone will be dutifully monitoring Facebook and Twitter (at double pay) despite the fact that both have been obsolete since October 2009.
They're going to be ready for the next once in a lifetime Presidential Inauguration. Maybe!
I don't really spend much time on twitter due to the fact I was properly educated. I don't really have a point here; just trying to distinguish myself from the plebeians.
Well done.
When I f*ck up in the future, I'll just say that "my benchmarks for planning were based on my best abilities to forecast future eventualities multiplied by an unknown factor based on past experience, which must be acknowledged as an inexact science."
It was beauty that killed the beast....along with a fall from the Empire State building and all them friggin bullets.
Poor planning my arse. Was a committee formed just to figure that out and who payed for it? Wait..don't answer..because you know they'll form another committee and then another committee. Can't we just hire Captain Obvious?
Wait, people still care about this? That was two months ago.
how about next time they just don't overpanic like they tend to all the time around here.
keep the securicrats away from the planning. thing will go more smoothly...
From what I understood they did leave the security people out of the planning. In the past, there were far fewer tickets issued, but the planning committee decided to increase the number without consulting secret service and others. At the last minute (like the day before during the secret service run through) the secret service realized that there was no way in hell all the people with tickets were getting in, but since they hadn't been consulted during the planning, it was too late. Hence, disaster ensued.
Bad communication? Try no communication.
gah, just take the fences down and let everyone who wants on the mall on the mall. survival of the fittest, i say!
wasnt most of this outsourced to events planning organizations? sure 20 different gov orgs had fingers in this whole thing which couldnt have helped, but im guessing a lot of this was contracted out.
This is the exact same headline we are going to see after the 2009 White House Egg Roll Disaster.
