Weekly Music Agenda
The Pogues
>> It's the middle of March, which means two things: basketball and all things Irish. As has become tradition, Shane MacGowan and his band, The Pogues, are extending their annual visit to three nights at the 9:30 Club in celebration of St Patrick's Day. Monday and Tuesday are both sold out (try Craigslist), but tickets for Wednesday are still available. $55, 7 p.m.
TUESDAY
>> There's sure to be whiskey in the jar this St. Paddy's day as Rose hosts her 5th annual celebration of the holiday, along with some of D.C.'s other alt-country acts: Revival, John Bustine and Brandon Butler. $6, at DC9.
>> The always subtle Rock and Roll Hotel is celebrating the greenest of holidays with their Party Till You Puke St Patrick's Day party, featuring free swag, drink specials and an appearance from the Jameson girls. Not music-related, but if you're looking to drink too much in honor of the removal of snakes from a country you don't live in, this option will probably have fewer holiday-related hassles than your standard-issue pub. Free.
WEDNESDAY
>> Despite what the Black Cat's schedule may lead you to believe, AC Newman and Carl Newman are the same person. Better known as the frontman of The New Pornographers, he's touring in support of his second solo album, Get Guilty. With Broken West, $15, 8 p.m.
>> Don't forget, as of the writing of this agenda, tickets are still available for Wednesday night's Pogues show at the 9:30 Club. $55.
>> Big strong female vocals are always a welcome addition to the music landscape. Nicole Atkins adds hers for consideration this evening at DC9. $10
THURSDAY
>> Recent Three Stars subject and veritable local super group Pree are releasing their first album this week at the Black Cat. With DCist favorite (and video correspondent) Meredith Bragg, (***) and Birdlips. $8, backstage, 9 p.m.
FRIDAY
>> We really enjoyed the last Ting Tings performance at the 9:30 Club, and apparently you did too. This week's visit is already sold out. But if you want to dance out the week behind you, you might want to try scoring a pair on Craigslist.
>> DD/MM/YYYY are all snare drum, all the time. But it seems to work. If you're feeling percussive, head to The Red and The Black to catch these Canadians with Surprise! Arizona, The Shackeltons, and Cinema Cinema. $10, 8:30 p.m.
>> If you'd had big hopes of seeing some New Jack Swing this weekend, I have bad news. Jodeci's show at The Birchmere was cancelled. Refunds are available through April 3 at your point of purchase.
SATURDAY
>> We can't think of a better way to celebrate a Saturday night than with some Afrobeat at the Black Cat. D.C.'s Chopteeth and SEE-I are your hosts for the evening. $15, 9 p.m.
>> It's no wonder The Mountain Goats & John Vanderslice (who we interviewed in 2006) sold out Sixth & I Historic Synagogue — it seems like just the right venue for singer-songwriters with a rock bent. 8 p.m. Sold Out.
>> Our local experts in moody pop-rock, Telograph, are playing a hometown show at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Brooklyn's The Picture and D.C.'s Mittenfields. $10, 8:30 p.m.
>> If you like avant-garde music, the eclectic minds behind the Sonic Circuits festival have a perfect lineup for you this weekend. Silver Spring's Pyramid Atlantic is playing host to their March Madness event, featuring Russian alt rocker Alexei Borisov and six other artists sure to show you something new. $8, 7:30 p.m.
SUNDAY
>> The 9:30 Club is really cleaning up this week. Every show seems to be sold out. Is there a lot of 2005 nostalgia for Bloc Party already? If you're interested in seeing one of the best performing drummers today, try and find a ticket one way or another.
