All Hands On Deck Weekend Ends In Violence

It'd be a fool's game to try and guess whether this weekend's increased police presence played any part in it, but still -- MPD Chief Cathy Lanier can't be too thrilled about this afternoon's fatal shooting in Northwest which bookended this weekend's "All Hands On Deck" effort. WTOP reports that a unnamed person with a gun entered a home at 67 Bryant Street NW and opened fire, killing one woman and striking three other adults. The three struck adults did not suffer life-threatening injuries. We're also hearing word that shots may have been fired in Columbia Heights this afternoon near 14th and Harvard Streets NW. Considering today's incidents, last night's shooting at 14th and W Streets NW, and the debate revolving around the effectiveness of "All Hands On Deck," Chief Lanier has to be preparing for a long day tomorrow.

I'm writing to confirm the shooting at 14th and Harvard today. In fact, I witnessed the entire incident at about 4:10PM. Was in my car on Harvard about to turn south onto 14th when I saw a young black male on the opposite side of the intersection pull a black handgun out of his pocket. He lifted the gun and started shooting (about 3 or 4 shots) at another young black male running east on Harvard. Still in shock my friend and I turned right to get out of there but got stuck at the red light by Dunkin Donuts. The shooter (black male, jeans, red t-shirt) came running south on 14th behind us so we decided to drive through the red light to create some distance. Another SUV did the exact same as us and ran the red light to get the hell out of there. We immediately called 911 to report what we had just witnessed. The shooter disappeared by the apartment building on the SW corner of 14th and Harvard.

The scary thing is that this happened in the middle of the day and the people involved looked like they were no older than 15 or 16. People walking nearby on the sidewalk hit the ground as soon as they heard shots.

Still in shock...

@MannyDC - Glad to hear you're OK.

As far as the "All Hands on Deck" goes, we can debate the effectiveness of it but mark me down as a fan. I was at the park with BabyRat's class right around lunch time on Friday and we all saw a police officer on foot patrol. The officer briefly stopped by the park and spoke to us before continuing his patrol. It was just a little thing, but the people (children and adults) that were there now have a some connection to the MPD however slight it may be. My hope is that this is the beginning of relationship between this officer and my neighborhood.

I think it is time to finally tear down the public housing on 14th st and replace it with a program that helps people without concentrating poverty in one location.

Safely ensconced in my plush suburban environs, this type of thing is outside of my reality.

But I'm slowly rotting from the inside.... My arteries are increasingly clogged with plaque... high blood pressure and dementia are surely in my future.

But I'm better than everyone else because I'm RICH! Ok, I gotta get back to work now. Nice talking down to you.

Im a fan too....I actually saw an officer write a ticket for blocking the bike lane on 14th as I was heading out of town on Saturday night
Brings warmth to my heart

what a joke. all i saw was throngs of police near the K street club scene on bikes, motorcycles and squad cars with their sirens blaring. they were blocking traffic for no reason, and just generally getting in the way. they seemed, more than anything, to enjoy the attention.

Are you sure it was called "All Hands on Deck?" It sure seemed to me like it was called "All Hands at the 7-11 on South Capitol Street."

Cops in cars, on foot, on bikes, and, of course, on Segways. Most wearing billowing oversized cargo pants that made them look like cartoon characters. It was quite a sight,

a sad sight, but a sight none the less.

Meanwhile, 2 blocks south in the housing projects, the drug dealers were working their corners without a car in the world.

Or for that matter, without a "care" in the world...

I thought something was going on Sunday afternoon, I was wheeling my cart full of groceries down the esclelator to board metro and heard two guys running down the escelator behind me saying something about a guy who "pulled out a glock and just started shooting"...

Glad I wasn't just a few minutes later with my shopping! Scary!

So that's what the helicopter flying over the house was on Saturday when we were trying to hang out and watch our movie...figures.
