Local non-profit Miriam's Kitchen, which provides meals and services to D.C.'s homeless population, is kicking off its annual 100 Bowls of Compassion fundraising effort this year with a chance to play an amusing prank on someone you know. All you have to do is click on this link and nominate any individual (presumably, someone you know with deep pockets would be preferable) who will then have their office, bedroom or car plastered with styrofoam bowls, as pictured in the video above.
Miriam's Kitchen will select two "lucky" winners to be "bowled." After the good-natured vandalism, the winners will also receive a free ticket to the 100 Bowls of Compassion Gala on May 14. Miriam's says the gimmick is an effort to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness in our Nation's Capital. It certainly couldn't hurt for you to click through and nominate someone (and hey, why not throw a few bucks their way while you're there).

Styrofoam. How enviromentally irresponsible of them.
so let me get this straight. they want people to spend money on bowls and supplies to stick the bowls to the walls of a friends house, instead of just giving that money to the kitchen?
Not funny and irresponsible. Please don't participate in this rediculous nonsense, and DCist you've lost some points for covering it positively.
I think it's an interesting and creative way for a local nonprofit to raise funds and awareness.
Okay, sure, maybe they could find plastic or paper bowls to use. But I'm still super glad they feed the hungry. If you were homeless and hungry, would you turn your nose up at soup served in a styrofoam bowl? You wouldn't.
it isnt the use of the bowls, styrofoam or not, it is the cost going into them that i think could just be turned around and given directly to the kitchen.
why not just take all their kitchen stuff and move it into another room or something videotape it? its the cost of the bowls, etc that bothers me. but hey, i like a good prank just like the next guy.
While I agree that this "prank" is a little underwhelming as far as mischief goes...
Miriam's is doing great work for DC's (ever-growing) homeless population. They served more than 55,000 meals last year, bright and early each weekday morning.
The 100 Bowls of Compassion gala fundraiser brings in a ton of money for them each year, helping keep their doors open and stoves on year-round. So click through their site and give them some dough!

My woodturning club (and I) are donating (lathe) turned items for auction at the gala. Every little thing helps.
And I agree there may be better ways of promoting their cause than Styrofoam bowls.
We appreciate your concern for the environment. It is something we are absolutely committed to and as such, we are properly reusing and recycling the bowls that were used for the video. None of the bowls have been thrown away, nor were they purchased by Miriam's Kitchen. We can assure you that any money that is donated to Miriam's Kitchen is used to help our guests. Additionally, we use hard plastic plates, bowls and cups that are washed and reused in our dining room each day, so very little is wasted at Miriam's Kitchen.
Again, thank you for raising your concerns about the use of styrofoam bowls. If you have any questions about Miriam's Kitchen or our video, feel free to contact me at jenn@miriamskitchen.org or (202) 452-8926 x 8#. Thank you.
You're worried about the cost of the bowls and why they didn't just give that money to the kitchen?!?? That's just silly. When was the last time anyone paid more than 5 bucks for a giant pack of disposable bowls, plus a roll of tape that was probably already sitting around? Sure it's a silly prank, but I hope this generates a lot of money for them.
