Breaking News: Detergent is Bad for You

2009_0427_kirkland2.jpg Here's some news that will not make GWU alums proud of their alma mater: the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity apparently used abrasive laundry detergent to lubricate a Slip-n-Slide at a charity event this weekend, sending at least one sorority member to the hospital with chemical burns and severe skin irritation. After the event, university officials sent out an email warning that "Possible symptoms from the laundry detergent could also include shortness of breath, throat closing and severe pain in the genital region..." Yeesh. The event, ironically, raised money for the D.C. Firefighters' Burn Foundation. The Hatchet's article doesn't quote the fraternity president as apologizing (it's certainly possible he did), but quotes him as saying, "We're really fortunate that the women in Greek life on campus really made the event special." Maybe next time read the label, or you know, use water.

I dunno about GWU's PIKAs, but the ones in College Park were f**king high all the time.

Well, at least those filthy college students are now clean!

This is what happens when greek organizations try to disguise drinking binges as charity events.

Maybe bubble bath next time, hmmm?

Yeah, or body wash - or even dial soap! Lots of other options here, people...

This is what happens when the most expensive university in America slips to the second most expensive. This could have all been avoided...what a shame. Fucking idiots.

I can just see this.

"I swear, I contracted this severe pain in the genital region on a slip n slide. I swear baby."

Laundry detergent? Really.

I'm surprised they didn't add a few brillo-pad moguls to the sudsy slopes.

Common sense is in spite of, not the result of, higher education.

Aww come on. You can't be that hard on them. It SOUNDS like a good idea.

Never would have happened at the University of Alabama.

Breaking: Frat boys are stupid

Hey college kids, use the liquid laundry detergent next time. The powder isn't going to do it for you.

OK, OK, "Frat Boys *can be* Stupid", usually because they're drinking while planning these sorts of things. I didn't mean to throw a bomb, and lord knows the DCist commenters would not let me get away with it!

Next year, just have people run through sprinklers and call it a wet t-shirt contest, guys.

You'd think that the kids who get into a private university as expensive and exclusive as this one would be smart enough to avoid such mishaps.

GWU is expensive, but not exclusive. All you need is a pulse to get in, as long as you can foot the 50k/year bill.

that's bs. gw gives more financial aid than any other school in the country. what i pay is less than a lot of state schools. and you need a bit more than pulse to get in. we're usually around #50 in the rankings. no need to be bitter.

Duh.

Your go-to mass quantity human compatible lubricant is "animal birthing agent," per Mythbusters.

Like you didn't pull things like this at that age. Don't be hatin.

I'm with ya. I'm thinking back to my antics at GWU (shudder).

bwahahahahahaha this story is about my roommate!

"Shortness of breath, throat closing and severe pain in the genital region"... at a frat party? Shocking.

See, that's what I don't get. The last time I made an inappropriate rape joke on dcist, I nearly got banned. Apparently, all it takes is a goddamned panda avatar and you can crack wise about the rape of the Sabines. Time to ankle this joint.

It wasn't intended as a rape joke. Those don't fly with the panda.

Flying pandas making unintentional rape jokes? Throw in some fart humor and an aversion to vaccination shots and you've got the next Jim Carrey vehicle.

They never would have had this problem if they'd just listened to me and mixed bleach and ammonia instead.

They chose to use detergent over KY Jelly®?!

Indeed. All that dough on a fancy education and they can't launder their clothes or properly lubricate the human body?

These days, college is pretty much structured to teach you those two things.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but why not use water? Isn't that what is supposed to be used in a Slip-N-Slide? Yes, there are still injuries. These things are inherently dangerous, but water doesn't give you chemical burns. And isn't water a lot cheaper than laundry detergent? It's nice to know the bad economy is not making some people cut back on their expenses, no mater how ridiculous.

I'm thinking the stunt was both about realizing a long standing frat boy fantasy of seeing hot wet soapy scantily-clad co-eds while simultaneously raising money for a good cause. I actually admire the conceptually-brilliant multi-tasking of sin and absolution. But at that meta-level, water wouldn't cut it and Liquid Silk woulda been expensive overkill. And college students are always better at theory than practice. :)

ding ding ding ding! we have a winner! You nailed it.

of course. your erudite response could have been summed up as "soapy coeds". i am shifting on this issue-now acknowledging the ingenuity of these fine young lads.

Another GWU-centered post by the Wise-man. ...Obvi! I'm sure you understood that one :)

As a former GW fraternity member, I would ask people not to judge people in greek life as one solid block. There are stupid people in all areas of life. GW Greek organizations don't normally fit the normal "frat" stereotypes. When you look at Greek life in general please realize that as with any segment of the student population, stupid people exist and incidents happen.
Also, for 2006/2007 GW Greek life combined to raise $160,000 for various charities. So please don't prejudge greek life philanthropy events. For the most part they raise a lot of money for good causes and don't cause chemical burns. This was clearly a very stupid mistake done without thought and without any malevolence.

friend, dont sweat it. people here know the deal (extend hand, wiggle pinky, lock thumbs, shake)

As a former GW member, my dick smells.
