The DC Creates Public Arts Program and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities unveiled several new pieces of public art at Nationals Park on Wednesday. The pieces include sculptures of Washington Senators players Frank Howard and Walter Johnson, and Homestead Grays player Josh Gibson, all created by Omri Amrany, and The Ballgame, a suspended artwork created by D.C. artist Walter Kravitz. DCist photographer Meaghan Gay stopped by to get a closer look.

I think it speaks to man's inhumanity to man.
first!
Yes, all well and good, but is it art?
Kinda looks like a whale penis from this angle.
Yeah, it really straddles the line between profundity and dead pan cliche.
I cannot get over how fucking ugly these statues are. This is a ballpark, not Irvine Contemporary. These needed to resonate with the least common denominator attending games (me). The fact that it was TAXPAYER MONEY that funded them makes me sick.
I hope I see them in person and love 'em but from this e-vantage point, they look like dogshit. (Quite literally between the baseball bats.)
I'm with you. From these pics they kind of remind me of the Incredible Hulk mid transformation.
it's not TAXPAYER money. All public art in DC (and most cities across the nation) comes from 1% of the city's construction budget meaning the money is coming from developers.
Seriously?! A "statue" is meant to be resembling a likeness, especially in dignity, shapeliness, or stillness. STILLNESS! Pigeons will be embarrassed just to perch on it, much less defecate.
In case you missed it, Forbes says Nationals owner Theodore Lerner is now worth $3.2 billion.
Art is good. Baseball is good. But why is the cash-strapped DC Government ">buying art work for the wealthy Lerners?
Oops. Strike one.
Here's that

I know it's the job of Washington Post style journalists to pan new movies that come out or artwork that is made, but I thought the statues, especially the one of Walter Johnson, looked good. Whether DC should be paying for this art is another matter. But considering this is a modern stadium it makes more sense to have modern art there than clunky old statues accumulating pigeon poop.
So obviously looking at the thumbnails, I thought, WTF, mate? Then I took a closer look and wanted to cry, W.T.F.?
Gross. Just. Gross.
Not only did the city buy art for a baseball stadium (WTF?) but it's lousy and disgusting art, adding insult to injury with the new Screech.
Damn it. We should just stop giving them money, because it's not making things any better. They should be paying us. And now I have to walk in a look at it every time.
Still not a single tribute to the only person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the franchise, Gary Carter.
The Lerners could care less about real baseball history, they would rather spend money trying to convince fans that the Senators (which version?) are somehow part of the Nationals' history. Its downright shameful treatment of a Hall of Famer from a downright pathetic organization. Enjoy last place Lerners. You've earned it.
All I can think of saying when looking at this ridiculous sculpture is:"WHERE IS THE PRINCESS LUKE SKYWALKER'
