Click Click: Travis @ 9:30 Club

If I were a scientist - which I'm not, for the record - my life's work would be spent studying the direct correlation between energy and happiness radiating from any particular stage, and the audience's perception of the show taking place. I'd cite specific examples from venues both large and small, but one case in particular would surely land me a Nobel nomination (for which category, I'm not sure).

April 23, 2009: Travis, the Scottish quintet made famous by the 1999 single "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?", headlines the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. and leaves the near-capacity crowd emotionally more stable than they found it. Had a bad day? Don't worry: frontman Fran Healy will lift your spirits by a) insisting that everyone in attendance "do the pogo" during the aforementioned song's final chorus, b) calling another song the band wrote "complete dogshit" and c) describing the undeniable elation of watching his 3-year-old jump on a bed via iChat.

Rolling through a setlist that included hits from their humble beginnings to their most recent release (last year's Ode To J. Smith) the band kept pace for 90 minutes, rarely skipping a beat even when diving into the softest of tunes. Upbeat tracks like "Sing" and "Turn" were complemented nicely by the heartfelt messages of "Love Will Come Through" and "Before You Were Young." Even with the audience chit-chatting away during "The Humpty Dumpty Love Song," the sense of pure bliss emanating from the stage was hard to ignore.

Introducing the crowd to his bandmates just before a beautiful acoustic version of "Flowers In The Window," Healy acted as though last night's show was a defining moment in Travis's career, not just another routine tour stop in the Nation's capital. He made the crowd feel at ease, smiling the whole time and even thanking the 9:30 Club staff before departing. It was a fantastic start to the weekend, and if you were in attendance and disagree, please let me know. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone - it's for research purposes only.

was Steven Lipski present for the song Why Does It Always Rain On Me?

Do they have new music out or are they just sing the same songs they've been singing for the last 10 years?

I don't know if that's an inside joke or a serious question or what, McGillicuddy, but no, I don't believe so.

charliegal, they released a new album last year (as stated in the review) and played quite a few tunes off of that as well as their last few albums. I don't have the full setlist, but these are the songs I put into my phone:

Writing To Reach You
J. Smith
Love Will Come Through
Driftwood
Side
Sing
Humpty Dumpty Love Song
My Eyes
Before You Were Young
Turn
Blue Flashing Light
Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
Flowers In The Window
