Interesting story from the Post's Nikita Stewart and Tim Craig on meetings between D.C. Council member David Catania (I-At large) and Vermont state senator Peter Shumlin (D) in advance of Tuesday's near simultaneous passage of gay marriage-related bills in D.C. and Vermont. Did they plan it that way? Kinda sorta maybe. "The two men have been talking about pushing gay marriage since they met seven years ago," Stewart and Craig write. Plus, wasn't the D.C. bill sponsored by Phil Mendelson? Indeed, but D.C. Wire explains that the plan was worked out behind closed doors between Mendelson, Council chair Vincent Gray, and Catania.

Do you really think that Vermont planned a vote last week, a Governor's veto Monday, and then a nail-biting override vote on Tuesday just so they could be on the same day as DC? Maybe DC planned to wait for the first state that passed gay marriage through their legislature and that happened to be Vermont on Tuesday, but I'd bet big money Vermont wasn't setting their schedule based on DC's.
Maybe D.C. and Vermont should get gay-married. They would be an odd couple, for sure, but the publicity could work wonders for the cause.
Are you crazy? We can't let a state marry a non-state. If we let that happen, we might as well pave the way for people to marry dogs. God forbids such activity, and you should to. Shame on your comment!!!!!1111!!!!
@yonas
NICE! 10 points for style!
What? Mendo doing a closed door deal? Shocking.
I support this legislation, but they should have waited until after the vote bill is acted on. (which, BTW, the longer they wait, the less chance it will actually happen). No reason to spark any additional linkages at this point.
(yeah, it's not right, we shouldn't have to, blah, blah, blah. But thems the facts, baby).
