First Pitches Successfully Deployed

There were five opening pitches to kick of the Nationals season in today's home opener, one tossed by a representative of each of the five branches of the military: the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. One source says that the Army representative was the Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard, which would make him Errol Schwartz. A woman representing the Navy and an injured Air Force figure both bounced the pitch to home. It appeared as if the Marine threw a strike, though it was difficult to say since the entire military complement threw their opening pitches at once. Reports from several sources inside Nationals Park have it that Mayor Adrian Fenty came out and gave a fairly lame "Play ball" to kick off the season. So that settles who replaced President Barack Obama, and very well might be the most excitement the game has to offer.

First Pitches?

So they're all first? That's just stupid. Might as well say both teams win the game. We're all first! We're all winners!

Man, I was sitting right there and missed that. Just goes to show there was no effort made for that tradition.
Never even saw it happen. Saw Fenty though. That guy's a tool.

Pls update after President's Race.

military style: firing squad.

Judging by the statue at the ballpark, Frank Howard could have thrown all five pitches at the same time.

Well, the Nats went with a safe and nice ceremony pre-game. Pretty lame President Obama stood us up for the DOT and another budget meeting, but them's the breaks.

The many Nats cynics were proven right with the errors and another loss. But they hit the ball hard and provided entertainment for a good crowd. Not an overwhelming amount of Philth.

I'm gonna say it. Obama is a dick for not showing up. I don't give a crap about schedule conflicts or how busy he is. He's got time for Jay Leno, then he's got time for the citizens of DC. At the end of the day, the fact that they go out to dinner and go to church, blah blah blah is all well and good, but in the end that stuff is meaningless. This sort of thing demonstrates you are in tune with the locals, and it takes all of 10 minutes to do via chopper. Weak Obama, very weak.

Compare the audience of Jay Leno to the audience of the Nationals plus all the citizens of DC. Also note that throwing out the first pitch is just an appearance and there would be no remarks/interview with the President ala Leno. Also recall that Obama recently went to a Wizards game.

The idea that going out to dinner/church is 'meaningless' but a first pitch isn't just doesn't make any sense to me. A first pitch is the illustration of 'meaningless gesture' in the dictionary.

He didn't show up because the White House Easter Egg Roll is held the Monday after Easter and he has two small daughters.

I was going to be pissed he didn't show up too, but I let him off the hook this time.

i would rather obama stay at work than waste time on a waste of a team like the nats. i'm glad the lerners got the big finger from the big o. DC residents need to get over themselves and be pissed at the right people: the jagoff lerners. wanna be pissed? be pissed at a family that has screwed DC over at EVERY available opportunity, has fielded what may be the WORST major league baseball team in history, and overcharges you for the experience. no wonder obama said thanks BUT NO THANKS. grow up people

I agree, but I think DC did more screwing of themselves, or at least, allowed themselves to be screwed during negotiations with MLB.

absolutely. man did they give away the milk with that one. but who'da thought the new owners of the nats would be so downright miserly?
