We're unabashed fans of Girls Rock! DC, the one-week day camp for girls age 8-18 (check out some of our previous coverage). The camp is now entering its second year, and they've asked us for help locating volunteers. Girls Rock! DC is seeking volunteers of all kinds to be counselors, band coaches, fundraisers, roadies and more. No musical experience is necessary, and volunteers can work during camp week (Aug. 10-15) or behind the scenes before camp. Volunteer applications are due this Monday, May 4, so download an application and contact the camp with any questions you might have.

I can't wait until BabyRat is old enough to go to this!!

I don't support sexist organizations.

All the sexism in the world and *this* is what concerns you?

Rock and roll has been a sexist institution from the get-go. I'm not sure what's sexist about attempting to eliminate that perception by showing little girls that boys aren't the only ones who can rock out.

If these girls haven't learned how to rock by the age of 8, then nothing I do is going to help them.

Every volunteer position is Girls/women/females only. SEXIST.

As Nigel Tufnel once said, 'what's wrong with bein' sexy?'

Untrue, there were pre-camp jobs available for anyone. Even so, I think you're missing the point here. As Ian correctly pointed out earlier, rock & roll has been a sexist institution from the start so I don't see the problem with creating some space specifically for women & girls.

Also, are you always this on guard against all sexism? Can we now count on you to call out sexist behavior wherever and whenever it occurs on DCist? Will you be confronting drunken jabronis on 18th St who catcall at women and protesting the fact that women in many offices in DC are obliged to wear pantyhose no matter how hot it is? Or are you just calling sexism because your little babynuts are offended that there's a game you can't play in?

Even so, I think you're missing the point here. As Ian correctly pointed out earlier, rock & roll has been a sexist institution from the start so I don't see the problem with creating some space specifically for women & girls.
It may be that you are missing the point. Discrimination is discrimination. Water coolers, rest rooms, bus seats for "Blacks Only" "created space specifically" for one race. "Creating space specifically" for females is no different.

Rock 'n Roll has performers who are male and female with the greatest "discrimination" coming from fan's tastes. While the themes of this music range from love ballads ( Unchained Melody) to clearly misogynistic songs (Smack My Bitch Up), market forces dictate the state of the business.

Also as to "...a sexist institution from the start..." are you referring to the mid 1950’s? I’m afraid one can’t compare Hip Hop to early Rock ‘n Roll.

A simple "two wrongs don't make a right" applies here. If their reasoning is for the perceived safety of not introducing males to pre-pubescent females, they should say it, otherwise they are clearly discriminating against males.

Discrimination is discrimination.

By your logic having separate boys and girls soccer teams is tantamount to "separate but equal."

There are thousands of all-boy baseball, football, wrestling, lacrosse, etc. teams in the Metro area and likewise there are thousands of all-girl teams. Are all of these teams discriminating?

The easy answer is yes they are discriminating, but that has to be taken up with the authors of The Sex Discrimination Act 1975. I think the bigger point being made here is this group, in all good intentions, sets itself for being called discriminatory in that they go out of their way to say they don't discriminate, while in fact they clearly do.

Seems like a positive event, but their discrimination policy is a little weird. The only thung they dont say they dont discriminate against is gender. there is a loophole, however. They dont discriminate against "gender expression", so if are willing to wear a dress, i am sure they will welcome you.
