Kal Penn Spoiled the House Episode That's on My TiVo

2009_0407_kalpenn.jpg All day I've been trying to think of an angle for a quick post on the news that actor Kal Penn (The Namesake, Harold & Kumar) is leaving Hollywood in favor of D.C. and a job inside the White House Office of Public Liaison. We could speculate where he should probably live (Dupont seems the most likely candidate, close enough to walk to work but still young and fun and overpriced), or something like that. But frankly, I've been too pissed that I managed to absolutely ruin the episode of House that's still sitting on my TiVo by skimming the comments in this Lynn Sweet blog post (EW.com was the first to report the news). I'm always happy to welcome another L.A. transplant to town, but Penn couldn't have waited a couple days to announce this one? Gah. He's lucky we went to the same college, so I can't really stay mad for long. Welcome to D.C., Kal. If you're anything like me, you're not going to miss Los Angeles for a second.

you're not going to miss Los Angeles for a second...exceptions to Pinks, Tommy Burger and Philippe's and all Mexican food....Also the news here sucks and natural disasters are too infrequent.

I'll give you the Mexican food, RJ. Well that, and almost any food made with fresh produce.

Yes, the local news here does suck. Which is weird.

And Mexican food here usually sucks.

Ohhh, cutie pie is going to be working near my office? Would it be too stalkish to hang out at the Cosi or Caribou near EEOB to run into him? I promise I would wear some clothing, and not to yell out "I got yer 'Namesake' riiiight here, sweetie!"

As for where he should live: Bethesda. Definitely Bethesda.

You're gonna have to fight me for him, Beth. Kumar's mine! To quote Short Round, "Maybe he like...older women."

Hey, Kumar can go to my White Castle anytime. He can even bring Harold to make it interesting.

Indeed. Stalkers...start your engines!

Waaaah! tear

What is he supposed to do, ask if everyone watched their TiVo before talking? All's fair in DVR and spoilers.

I got your back on this Sommer and I don't even watch House, but I'd be pissed at Lynn Sweet for having the first freaking thing on her post be an update with a ridiculous, huge spoiler with no warning or even hint of one.

I'd say it's pretty common courtesy these days (w/ so much tivo and netflix etc) that you need to warn folks. I'd say Sweet is out of touch and a bad internet writer/user based on this alone.

kinda cool that Penn is taking a WH job and moving to town though.

You and Sommer are wrong. Spoiler alerts are not necessary after an episode has aired. If you choose to time-shift, do so at your own risk.

Can someone explain to me how Kal Penn got a job in the White House and I'm stuck piddling away in association work???

I know he majored in sociology and did some work for the Obama campaign, but what the hell is KUMAR doing hanging out smoking weed in the Oval Office? Screw the House spoiler, this just seems much more unfair.

Easy. One/all of the following apply:

(a) You're not a "famous" (and I use that term loosely with Mr. Penn) actor/celebrity.

(b) You're not the offspring of a rich or influential family; therefore mummy couldn't buy your way in the WH.

(c) You have no connections for such a position.

(d) You don’t have the credentials, drive or talent for such a position.

You should be glad you have a job, you entitled ingrate. Are you a Millennial by chance?

He also spent a ton of his time volunteering for the Obama campaign, stumping in random small midwest towns in the middle of winter and using his modest "celebrity" for no reason other than supporting the campaign. Consequently, he got to know the people who now run the WH Public Liaison office. He was pretty deep into the campaign, even coming out to speak at the OFA "thank you" event after inauguration.

Sure, he couldn't get to this point without being famous, but he didn't get the job because he was famous (see Gupta, Sanjay), he got it because he was a great surrogate for the campaign.

And what is all this House nonsense? He will forever be Kumar.

"Sure, he couldn't get to this point without being famous"
-Thank you for proving my point.

-Also, you're aware that Sanjay Gupta was a well know TV host on CNN prior to joining the administration, right? That would qualify him a public personality/celebrity. Nice try though. Might want to research what you're gonna say next time.

I just wish we could get some A-Listers in the administration instead of this C-List stoner movie hack. Maybe Will Smith is free? I heard Jessica Alba campaigned for him, let’s give her an appointment too!!!!!!!

Huh. You're clearly not aware that Sanjay Gupta has not joined (and will not be joining) the Obama administration. What was that about "research," again?

He didn't really spoil anything, it all happens in the first couple minutes of the show, before the credits even finish displaying.

So maybe Kumar will get Obama to legalize the ganj? Hopefully Neil Patrick Harris doesn't steal Air Force One and make any love stains in the back.

Movie people are real people.
