Large Collision Between Buses and Cars Injures Kids

WJLA/ABC7 is on the scene of a major collision between two buses and two cars on New York Avenue at 1st Street NW earlier this afternoon. No serious injuries have been reported, but more than 20 children from Crofton Elementary School in Anne Arundel County are being evaluated for minor injuries. The students had been on a field trip in D.C.

The accident happened around 1:45 p.m., but the District Department of Transportation said at 3:35 p.m. that New York Avenue was still closed in both directions between North Capitol Street and M Street NW due to the accident. In addition, 1st Street NW is closed between N and M Streets. Traffic is being detoured onto M Street, but delays are expected and motorists are advised to plan alternative routes.

UPDATE 5:05 p.m. DDOT reports that New York Avenue and 1st Street NW have been reopened. However, delays may continue through rush hour.
