Lyme Disease Cases in D.C. Region Way Up

2009_0408_lymedisease.jpgDid you read this scary story in today's Post about how Lyme Disease cases in the Mid-Atlantic have gone way up over the last few years? Lyme disease reports apparently more than doubled in Virginia and Maryland from 2006 to 2007, and they don't even have data for 2008 yet. Gross. I used to think only folks in New England really had to worry about this creepy, tick-born disease that can cause fun symptoms like joint pain, heart problems, and even palsy, but apparently now we all have to take David Letterman's advice: as you head out and enjoy more outdoor activities this spring and summer, make sure when you get home to strip off all your clothes and check yourself for ticks!

if only there were a way to make the tick search co-ed and "fun"... alas, there's nothing sexy at all about ticks. Can even tequila bring the fun into it?

What about that stupid country song with the line about ticks that tries to make them sexy?

'Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight
I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks
I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers
And I'd like to check you for ticks.

I think the song is repulsive, but it might way some people. Can we say theme song for a lyme disease awareness campaign?

This sexy little minx needs it's own reality tv series. Something like "Bloodsucking Disease-carrying Parasite Charity Mafia" only more proactive.

Hmmm, how come vampires get all the blood-sucking glam? If only we could have Brad Pitt play a pouty, lusciuos tick... We'd change our tune, I'm sure.

Lavender wards off ticks and mosquitoes. Never thought I'd use that tip on DCist.

Oh... snap! why didn't I think of this?

How did the Tick get its name? ....Because it sucks and sucks until it assplodes. Lyme juice for ev'body! Yay!

Ticks are no joke. I got lyme disease last summer just by taking my dog for a walk in Rock Creek Park. At first I had terrible pains in my neck and really high fevers but I couldn't figure out what was going on. Eventually I got so tired and sick that I went to the doctor and she saw all the signs. I only had to take an anti-biotic for a couple weeks but it freaked me out. I thought I was going to end up like Irene from Real World Seattle!

So these here TICKS suck blood for food or are they just plain EVIL! Are they natures blood bank or are they just
the lost souls of fellow DCist hitchhiking down that hyper-electric cyberhighway?

Are we sure that is a picture of a tick? It could be a "parting gift" from one of the "Blond Charity Mafia" after a drunken night at the Tombs.

Ticks are sexy -- to other ticks.

They mate in several ways" , but afterwards they tend to complain about muscle aches, fatigue, general malaise.
