Recycle Your Old Cell Phone Tomorrow, Get Free Flower

2009_0420_flower.jpg I have three or four old cell phones sitting in the bottom drawer of my desk (along with roughly 20 cables and wires I have absolutely zero need for), so I'm relieved that today's rain means that the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District's "Flowers for Phones" promotion has been moved to tomorrow.

The concept is pretty straightforward: take your old, busted cell phone to either Farragut Square Park (Connecticut Ave. and K Street) or Golden Triangle Park (21st Street/M Street/New Hampshire Ave.) tomorrow between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., hand it over to the BID to be recycled, and you'll get a lovely potted daffodil, just like the one you see at right (and we see we're not the only ones who got guilted into posting about this).

The BID estimates there are 500 million used cell phones across the country with the potential to cause environmental harm, so they're offering this easy way to get yours safely recycled. All makes and models of mobile phones, pagers, and PDAs will be accepted, along with any batteries, chargers and accessories.

Nice bonus: all those turning in old cell phones will be entered to win a number of prizes from businesses within the BID (see full list).

Who is actually recycling them? I mean, these aren't going to end up in Nigeria being melted down by children are they?

They will most likely use natural gas, which burns much cleaner than children.

Flower for phones? Sounds good, I'll be sure to do it.

One important heads up: Be sure to delete all contacts and other information from the phone, you don't want to ">http://dcist.com/2008/12/12/fox_5_reporter_snags_mccain_campaig.php> end up like the McCain campaign!

Alternatively, you can donate your phone to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which will use it as a '911 phone' for survivors of domestic violence who may need a means to quickly contact emergency services. All you do is print out a postage-paid shipping label from their website and send in your phone. It's even tax deductible.

westminster already supplied the link, so I'll just add that there really isn't any excuse for hanging on to one old cell phone let alone several when they could be getting put to very good use.

and if you're too lazy to print out a prepaid shipping label and find a box/envelope there are drop boxes around town, I think some Whole Foods have them as well as the Takoma Co-op (??)
