An adult man was shot at around 11:35 p.m. last night in an incident police are preliminarily describing as "not a random attack." He is expected to survive, according to an early report from the Third District. While Fourteenth Street NW is posh, that intersection -- located uncomfortably close to this writer's home -- seems remarkably resistant to the themed restaurants and fantasy furniture stores that have taken root elsewhere along the corridor, featuring instead a sketch gas station, a spanking new CVS that's already been robbed once, and a carryout place that attracts lowlifes who harass the women who walk by.

And Now, 10-20 Inches

I tried to use that gas station once and they told me it was cash only. Wtf? I never went back.
Thanks for clarifying that it was an "adult man." For a minute there I thought it was a Peter Pan Syndrome suffering man child.
It sounds like you're actually happy about this shooting, as it lends "authenticity" to the "urban experience" of your neighborhood.
I don't see a single sentence that indicates the author was happy about the shooting -- it sounds to me like you're projecting.
I don't see anything in this post either that would suggest what you're implying.
Did anyone else hear something at 3 am? I thought that's what this was referring to, but apparently not. I didn't hear anything at 11:35
But all that "sketch" is all part of the neighborhood's charm! Right?
Fantastic. I live near 14th & W and definitely noticed an increase in police activity. I didn't hear gunshots (which is strange), but I did notice a sketchy dude looking into cars around 4am.
This sucks, it is so hot in my apartment because the a/c is not yet turned on, and I live on the 1st floor. Sleeping with the baseball bat next to the bed tonight.
14th Street between U and Columbia Heights just isn't a safe area. With the condos creeping up 14th and Columbia heights development creeping south, it's easy to forget that there remains a 6-7 block stretch that is virtually no-man's land. And as Kriston rightly points out, the 14th and W intersection remains undeterred by the development going on around it. Perhaps the redevelopment of the old shopping center will help matters, as will the redesign of the park a few blocks up.
Don't blame the few remaining working class residents. Although it displaced the poor decades ago, Georgetown is a hotbed of street crime.
I wouldn't go so far as to call DC's career loiterers and thugs "working class." Because if you love what you're doing, technically, it isn't "work."
And the thug-per-yuppie ratio is significantly higher in "CoHi" than it is in G'town.
The increase in crime on the 1400 Block of W Street is astounding (now as the weather gets warmer). It is important to point out that the parking lot at the corner of 14th and W (owned by Ready Personnel) is a huge factor in the crime on the block. Ready Personnel allows invididuals to drink, deal drugs and use drugs in the lot. The owner of Ready Personnel ignores community pleas to help (actually thumbs their nose at us). Please note that Ready Personnel is owned by a high-end florist called Greenworks. I would think before purchasing flowers from Greenworks based on the fact that the business ignores the community and contributes to the crime issues at 14th and W.
The increase in crime on the 1400 Block of W Street is astounding (now as the weather gets warmer). It is important to point out that the parking lot at the corner of 14th and W (owned by Ready Personnel) contributes directly to the crime. Ready Personnel allows invididuals to drink, deal drugs and use drugs in the lot. The owner of Ready Personnel regularly ignores the community's pleas to help (literally thumbing their nose directly at the community). Please note that Ready Personnel is owned by a high-end florist called Greenworks. I would think twice before purchasing flowers from Greenworks based on the fact that the business ignores the community and contributes to crime issues at 14th and W.
