Sidwell Parents Annoyed They're Not Friends With Obamas Yet

2009_0427_sidwell.jpg The President and First Lady have better things to do than brunch with the wealthy parents of their daughters' classmates. But it appears some families at Sidwell Friends, the private school attended by Malia and Sasha Obama, are disappointed that the first family donated autographed magazines, instead of hang-out time, for the Sidwell Friends School Dollars for Scholars benefit auction. “There were expectations that they might donate something more personal, like the Clintons did,” a source told MSNBC's Scoop blog, “Lots of people were disappointed.” Instead, the Obamas "only" submitted "a signed copy of the Rolling Stone issue featuring the president and a signed copy of the January Vogue that featured the first lady."

According to Sidwell's website, the "Dollars for Scholars" program raises money for student financial aid. In 1996, while Chelsea Clinton was attending the school, then president Bill Clinton donated a round of golf that raised almost six figures. Chelsea Clinton offered her babysitting services another year, and continues to participate - for this year's auction, she and a friend are offering a lunch or brunch in NYC to the highest bidder.

"“There were expectations that they might donate something more personal, like the Clintons did..."

Mr. Clinton, in particular, was famous for his "donations".

Boo Hoo Hoo. Cry me a river.

I just checked the Constitution of the United States, Article 2, Section 3 (Presidential Responsibilities). I re-read it ten times to make sure I didn't overlook the "hang-out time with the wealthy parents of your child's private school" responsibilities.

A-fucking-MEN! Who the hell do these snobs think they are? The self-entitlement that these rich idiots have is astonishing.

Isn't the idea of people paying a ton of money to have access to the President one of the things that people complained about the Clinton presidency?

Even if you could argue that this is for charity, not reelection, it would still be distasteful.

Besides, who are the real charity beneficiaries here? Sidwell is under a religious and PR obligation to open its school to people who can't afford it. When they can't raise enough money to do so, isn't it more likely that they'll simply raise the rates on the students that can pay to help cover the gap? So by raising money for these scholarships, aren't the wealthy Sidwell families simply raising money for themselves?

Unbelievable. You should be able to leverage the fact that you have the Prez's kids alone into beau coup bucks.

Eat the rich.

I want a better pony for my birthday next year. This one sucks.

um i'm just spitballin' here but gee maybe its because the president is just a tiny wee bit busy right now and doesn't have a lot of "hang-out time" right now.

what a bunch of whiners. boo-freakin-hoo.

no. sympathy. whatsoever.

I'm taking up a collection, so when we have enough for a sizable donation, we'll have that place renamed Sidwell Bitches School.

The comparison isn't even apples to oranges. What did Clinton donate in 1993?

What did Clinton donate in 1993? Cigars.

And, for the first time in memory, a quaker school comes across as... douche-y.

The people who send their kids there are a little oblivious to the economic crisis that OBAMA has to deal with right now. It might mean that they can only afford to have three BMWs in their driveway instead of five. Boo-effing-hoo. I attend an unnamed private school not to far away from Sidwell and know a bunch of the kids. They all hate Obama for sending his kid there because now whenever they go to take a crap there is one of those guys with a earpiece counting how many turds fall into the toilet bowl because after all, one of those COULD be a bomb. (If they are playing battleshits)

There are lots of schools in my neighborhood, public and parochial, which would be THRILLED to auction such items at a fundraiser, if Sidwell doesn't want them. Whatever parents were arrogant enough to speak about this to each other (not to mention the media) have really done a disservice to the school.
