The Examiner reports that the "Social" Safeway, located at 1855 Wisconsin Ave NW, will close on Sunday for extensive renovations. While residents in this toney Northwest D.C. neighborhood still have plenty of other grocery shopping options (there's a Whole Foods up the road in Glover Park, and a Giant a little north of there), Safeway is also offering folks who live in ZIP codes surrounding the store free delivery with online orders. There are also plans for a temporary pharmacy to open across from the construction site. DCmud has more on the renovations themselves, which include demolishing the existing store and replacing it with an entirely new facility that will more closely resemble the "Sexy" Safeway in the CityVista building near Mt. Vernon Square. The "Social" Safeway is slated for a reopening in March of 2010.

Georgetown has never, and will never, have "tone." No Georgetown resident would ever deign to shop at a Safeway. They send their Japanese houseboy to Dean & Deluca for cheese platters, when they're not eating out every night. Even the Georgetown University students don't shop at Safeway. But their diets seem to consist only of alcohol, cigarettes, drama, and semen.
That must get pretty tiring, eating out every night. Not to mention expensive - treating a yeast infection isn't cheap.
That stupid "Social Safeway" BS needs to die an honorable death.
Actually, all variety of town folk shop at my safeway. There's many a well-heeled PYT in there. G Park has a fair share of G-townies (I mean, they are just you local yokels with better grades and richer parents, aren't they?) and a strong representation of AU putzes who think that moving down south to Glover is really slumming it.
The Social wasn't a bad place to shop at all. Certainly compared to that little un-jolly giant up the road...I'd sooner shit in a can, freeze it and eat my own fudgsicles for 6 months than buy anything there.
It's Whole Foods or bust, baby.
I live in Gtown and shop at that Safeway all the time. Your stereotyping of Gtown residents both ridiculous and misguided.
Thanks! But you forgot "borderline racist," "unfunny," and "not uninspired."
Monkey: Since you always seem to hate on Gtown: Kindly stay the fuck out of our bars and Apple store (once it opens). K thanks bye.
Not to worry TX2DC,
If you ever feel the stick up your ass start to loosen up, you can probably steal a fresh one from the building site!
I personally love the Social Safeway because it is frequented by white hat wearing, Hoya Saxonica, "I'm sooo much better than you" closet Nazis. To them it's the National Socialist Safeway.
Cleveland: Why the hate for Gtown? Did something happen to you? Daddy rape your ass in a Gtown alley? Don't fit in? Can't afford the rent? Why the hate? I bet you hate gays and immigrants too. Yeah, you seem the type. Seem someone about your hate and ignorance before it comsumes you!!
We can at least agree about the whole GU-student-semen-guzzling thing, right?
And the "haves" continue to get more, while we havenots continue to suffer with crappy Safeways...
Now run along to Harris Teeter ...
Meh...Harris Teeter is just a dressed up Piggly Wiggly... And just because we have the HT, doesn't give the Safeway an excuse to not keep up their Columbia Rd. store.
You ever been in that piece of crap Safeway? Ugh. I hate it. Rip it down and start again.
Feel persecuted much? It's not a "haves and have nots" thing. Check out the Safeway near GWU or on 17th. You really think the one in AM is worse than either of those? Check out the safeway at City Vista. You really think the median income in that corner of Shaw is lower than on 18th in AM near Kalorama?
"a Giant a little north of there"
Ah, yes, the Baghdad Giant. The finest selection of dented cans of beans, squashed bread and three-day-old sushi in all of N.W.
I live a block from this cesspool and refuse to shop there. Everything is ... sticky. Although maybe this will finally force my neighbors' hands and they'll stop protesting renovation and expansion so this Giant can become a proper grocery store (that sells beer.)
Speak on it...that's *technically* the closest supermarket to me too, and I won't set foot in there. Cleanliness standards from the mid-1450s, and no beer...much hatred have I reserved in my heart for that evil realm.
You can thank all the old ninnies who hate development in Cleveland Park for the Baghdad Giant. They have been trying for nearly 8 years to fix that Giant and block into a nice area only to hit a roadblock by a small group of people who think it will disrupt them.
Yesterday, there were dozens of people wandering around Mount Pleasant looking for Kalamara Road. They were lost.
They were urgent. They were looking for Harris Teeter.
I told them where it was. Was there an event going on...
pirates....teen sexting...?
Mmmmmmm... Calamari Road
I'll bet the "real" story behind the demolishing of the Safeway is Measles.
Do they really think they're going to demolish and completely rebuild the Safeway there in just 10 months? In D.C. time, it'll be reopening in March 2012.
Any idea what the free delivery zip codes are?
No, but surely its 20008 and 20007...those are the G-town/Glover Park (among other places) zip codes.
20005, 2006, 20007, 20008, 20009, 20010, 20036 & 20037-
although unless you want to stay home all day waiting for the delivery, I don't think it's really worth it.
Too bad this is a picture of "Unsafeway"
I think this Safeway IS sexy! I get hit on every time i shop there, which is actually not a very popular time (wednesday night at 9:30pm)...which leads me to believe it's even more of a party say, friday night. RIP, wisconsin safeway. Your veggies aren't too bad.
Has anyone actually ever actually picked up a tasty little morsel (male or female) at Social Safeway or is that just a myth?
Also, do they still call the Dupont store the Soviet Safeway? (long lines, nothing on the shelves).
Isn't there both a Soviet and Secret Safeway in the Dupont area?
For all the talk about fixing up just this Safeway, let's call a crap factory a crap factory. I can't really think of a "nice" Safeway in D.C. outside of Georgetown and Tenleytown.
I have spent way too much time thinking about ingredients for life today.

It's pretty great if you want to pick up some "exotic" middle-age butterface wife of a diplomat, or a dumb-as-a-bag-of-rocks GW/Georgetown sorority slut.
Wow, my two favorites!
My friend told me that back in the swinging '70s when there were very few places like Dean and Deluca the "Social" Safeway really was a hot pickup spot for horny G'town housewives. RIP.
Let's not get out of hand. The Adams Morgan Harris Teeter is heaven-sent compared to the other neighborhood options. And the customer service is revelatory for DC. (I bought some funky mushrooms once, and without a peep of protest, they refunded me twice what I paid AND gave me a free batch of good mushrooms.
And the Adams Morgan Safeway is also slated for major renovations. However, the crappy ass customer service will remain to be cherished by future generations.
