Sure enough, today's Teabag protest at Lafayette Square was over well before 2 p.m. By the time DCist checked back at the park at around 1:30 p.m., the entire area had been cleared, including Pennsylvania Ave., by the U.S. Park Police and Secret Service. What had been a drizzle was by then pouring rain, and when asked what had happened, one Park Police officer standing behind a line of yellow caution tape alluded to the weather being a safety concern. But that's not what really happened, according to the Associated Press: "... someone hurled a package in an apparent act of defiance meant to echo the rebellion of the Boston Tea Party and related tax protests around the country." And what was in the package? Why teabags, of course.

They obviously didn't bring a Dick Armey
I was there taking some photos around 10am (the scheduled start of the protest). It was a disorganized, sad little mess of a protest (both in practice and politics).
The 21st century is cool, and all, but somehow also ridiculous. Maybe because mannequin polar bears, boxes of tea, and homeless clothing are all considered national security risks.
My bus passed by Lafayette Square around 2:30 and there was still a crowd of protesters. I didn't see a stage but there were probably 50+ protestors mingling with signs. They didn't look like they were heading home. Perhaps the protest moved but I think to call it over before 2:00 is an exaggeration.
You all are making fun of them for throwing the teabagging phrase around as if they are just too stupid to know what it means. I don't buy it. I think they know exactly what it means. Do you think they'd get even half the press they got if they just called it the "Anti-Tax Protest"?
I got a copy of their internal memo and I think it proves my point:
I'm pretty sure that the people that came up with it originally knew what teabagging means in the urban dictionary sense, but most of the people who latched onto it probably have no idea.
It's kind of a half baked political version of when a innuendo filled pop song comes out and all the tweens sing along with the lyrics not understanding that when Frankie says "relax, don't do it, when you wanna come" he really, REALLY means it.
Leave it to the wtopnews.com commenters to be the voice of reason when it comes to the tax protesters. It's like watching Goofus and Gallant fighting over their mom's vibrator.
Tebagging... I see DCist is about as mature as MSNBC.
