Watch Yer Back, Mystics

In an announcement oddly timed with Earth Day, the Washington Mystics today inked a sponsorship deal with ExxonMobil, reports the Washington Business Journal. The massive oil company will now display courtside ads during Mystics games, a move that should place the team right alongside the Nationals as major targets of environmental protesters. Exxon will also become the official sponsor of the Mystics Student of the Week program. The Student of the Week program recognizes female high school students for excellence in math or science.

This just in.. Fake holiday fails to stem the tide of free commerce. More at 11.

Indeed. Earth day is to holidays as the WNBA is to sports.

I consulted with an actual mystic to learn what expect for the 2009 season and she said they would continue not to dunk.

Rip. Off.

I get that it's a fake "holiday" and all, but the idea behind it is good. And important. Still, it's a little bit depressing to realize that there are so many shitty sports clubs in the DC area that just don't get marketing and PR, and don't care about the fan experience. Several of them apparently don't care about fielding a competitive team, either.
