Metro today reminds us about this coming weekend's scheduled track maintenance and resulting delays.

Orange/Blue Lines: Bridge maintenance on the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory station will lead to delays of 30 minutes on the Orange and Blue lines. Trains will share the same track between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26.

Red Line: Ongoing rail and crosstie replacement work outside the Takoma station will cause 30 minute delays on the Red line, as well. Customers traveling between Fort Totten and Silver Spring will see trains sharing the same track from 10 p.m., Friday, April 24, to midnight on Sunday, April 26.

Congress should create a two week holiday for the federal and private sector that will close METRO for repairs. No tourists or non-subway employees will be allowed. This will give Metro enough time to fix the whole friggin system. It'll be a win-win situation. Everybody gets paid.
Everybody gets rested up. Some will get laid. The C.H.U.D.'s and Morlocks will party.

See, this is EXACTLY why WMATA needs to spend $1.7 mil on fugly station art: so you have something to look at while you wait half-an-hour for your train. It also gives you something to spit at.

About time they fix the switch between Takoma and Fort Totten.

I was sort of wondering about that bit of track. When I've sat on the left side of the train when the train is invariably waiting for the Takoma platform to clear, and I've looked at the track, the trackbed looks like a huge mess.

Seconded. For the past month or so it's been slow go out to Tacoma since that switch is in such need of work -- five to ten minutes just to go between Totten & Tacoma. Going downtown that part is always pretty bouncy, and heading home there's always a backup due to the track condition. Not good either way.

If you sit in the last seat of the last car (if they keep the door open) you can really see why that whole section of track needs replacing.

....but seriously folks. They should have a no service day in order to fix these serious problems. We all see what's coming.
